Description
S'IGMUND ULLMAN, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
Lett/:rs Patent No.81,963, dated September 8, 868.
IMPROVEMENT IN ENVELOPES.
titte 51132D1112 referrer tu lin tlgese tettn Extent ant'mating mit tf the same.
TO ALL'WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that I, SIGMUND ULLMAN, of the city, county, end State of New York, have invented a new and improved Envelope; and I do hereby declare that the following is n full, clear, and exact description tbereofQwhich will enable-others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference beinf:r hed to the accompenying drawings, forming a part oi this specification.
This invention relates to a. new end useful improvement in envelopes, endA has for its object the folding of the ends of an envelope in euch a. manner as to ciectually preclude the possibility of letters or money (bills) being. abstracted Without'lteoring or defacing the envelope. Letters and' money are at present frequently .abstracted from the ordinary envelopes, by means of a bent wire and other instruments, Without injuring or defocing them in the least. and my invention, it is believed, will eileetuelly prevent this system of pilfering.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings- Figure 1 is n view of the rear side of an envelope cut according to my improvement, and having one end unfolded.
Figure 2, a view ofthe rear side of the seme, having both ends folded.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the'body or main portion'of the envelope, the edges of the sides of which are connected by-a. double fold, a. This double fold, however, is not new, and is the some as one shown in an envelope recently patented by me. The ends of the envelope are out and folded quite differently from any envelope novi made.
The inner or rear side of the end of the envelope is cut obliquely from the double fold a outward to the ends, as shown et b 5in fig. 1, and the outer or face side of the end is notched out in V-form, as shown at e in the same ligure. l
The end ofthe envelope is then folded over et each side of its centre, as shown by the dotted lines d d, one side lapping over the other a suitable distance, and both folded sides are then folded over on' the body or main portion oil-'the envelope, e indicating the crease of the fold.,
The folded Yend, if an eyelet be used as o. fastening, is then perforated, as shown at f, iig. 1. If sealingwax, g, be used, as shown in tig. 2, no perforation of course is required.
By thus cutting and folding` the end 'of the envelope, it is impossible to insert a. wire or any instrument whatever into the envelope, and abstract a. letter or banknotes, without tearing or defacing the envelope.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim es new, and desire to secure by Letters 'atcnt, is-
An envelope, having;r its ends cut and folded in the manner substantially as herein shown and described,
SIGMUND ULLMAN.
