The terminal stays may evidently be furnished with the hooks and eyes or other cooperating attaching means in place as a finished article requiring fastening to the collar only to complete a firm handy means of close and secure attachment throughout the length of the division-line between the ends. The slit for attachment may evidently be located upon either the inner or outer side of the line of attachment between the stay and the hooks, &c.

It will be evident that the stays may be made of aluminium, bone, or any other suitable material, that they may be of any desired dimensions, and that the exterior of the stay or the covering thereof may be decorated or ornamented in any desired manner.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a device ofthe character described, a strip slitted uninterruptedly throughout substantially its entire length the slit of which is without the axis of the strip in combination with a tight cover for said strip.

4. In a device of the character described, a strip of uniform thickness, longitudinally slitted throughout substantially its length, and a tight-fitting tubular covering secured to the strip at its ends.

5. In a device of the character described, a single longitudinally-slitted strip integral at its ends, whereby the same is of uniform thickness, a tubular covering closely engaging the strip and means passing through the body of the strip for securing the covering thereto.
