ARTICLE OJF APPAREL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 733,603, dated July 14, 1903.
Application filed December 26,1902. Serial No. 136,690. (No model.)
To coll, whom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN STEINBORG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Menasha, in the county of lVinnebago and State of Illinois, have invented an Article of Apparel, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to apparel, and relates particularly to head-coverings.
The object of the invention is to provide an article of apparel adapted to protect both the head and the neck and which will combine the features of great warmth, simplicity, and eheapnessof manufacture.
Broadly stated, an article of apparel of my invention consists of a combined hood and tippet or neck-wrap, said tippetform in g means for securing the hood to the head.
The invention also consists of the various other features, combinations of features, and details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying' drawings an article of apparel embodying my invention in its preferable form is fully illustrated.
Figure l is a head wearing a hood of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view, partly in section, of a hood of my invention. Fig. 3 is a side view thereof, the hood portion being shown partly in section and the lining thereof being shown in unfolded position in dotted lines; and Fig. 4. is a sectional view on the line L 4 of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawings, l designates the hood proper of the article attached to and preferably formed integral with which are tippet ends 2, the hood portion being adapted to be adjusted to the head and secured by winding said tippet ends around the neck and fastening them, as by tying, pinning', or in other desired manner.
A combined hood and tippet of my invention is preferably made of knitted fabric, knit round or stocking-shaped and of any desired length, say seven feet (7 l) from end to end. My invention, however, contemplates making' it of any other desired material.
The ends of the article are iinished in any suitable manner to prevent raveling and to present a neat appearance.
The hood portion l is preferably larger than the tippet ends 2, and when made of knitted fabric is preferably knit more loosely, so that it will stretch more.
Formed in the hood proper, l, is a slit or opening 3, adapted to receive the head of the wearer. Preferably, also, the head portion of the article is made double, a piece 4, preferably of the same material as the rest of the article, being attached to the edges of the slit or opening 3 and being adapted to be folded inwardly'against the inside of said hood portion vl. Said piece 4f not only provides a covering of double thickness over the head, but also reinforces said hood portion and prevents the same from stretching unduly and getting out of shape.
I claiml. An article of apparel consisting of a tubular fabric provided between its ends with a slit or opening adapted to receive the head of the wearer, substantially as described.
2. An article of apparel consisting of a tubular fabric providedV between its ends with a slit or opening adapted to receive the head of the wearer and a lining attached to the edges of said slit or opening, substantially as described.
3. An article of apparel consisting of a tubular fabric and comprising an enlarged portion provided with a slit or opening adapted to receive the head of the wearer.
4.. An article of apparel consisting of a tubular fabric and comprising an enlarged portion provided with a slit or opening adapted to receive the head of the wearer and a lining attached to the edges of said slit or opening, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I affix my signature, in presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 19th day of December, A. D. i902.
JOHN STEINBORG.
