atent No. 356,142, dated January 18, 1887.
Serial No. 194,016. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, STEPHEN B. LEWIS and FRANKLIN F. LEWIS, of Portage, in the county of Columbia and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knit Garments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to knit garments; and
or shoulder portion knitted integral with Oras a continuation of but less elastic than the body portion, whether this quality be secured through the use of different material or by varying the stitch.
'In the annexed drawings, Figures l and 2 are face views of garments embodying the invention; Fig. 3, a plan view of a garment in position on the body.
It is a well-known factthat knit garmentssuch as shirts, jerseys, guernseys, Cardigan jackets, bicycle-jackets, Src., to each and all of which this invention applies ,-stretch out of shape about the shoulders and neck, as ordinarily manufactured. ATo obviate this difii! culty various expedients have been adopted, among othersaseparate facing of woven fabric, a binding sewed upon the edge of the knit fabric, or folding the edge under and sewing it. to the body. These and other plans are objectionable, on account of their cost, the unsightly appearance presented, and the thickness produced in the case of a folded edge. All these objections are overcome by this invention, which, as above mentioned, consists in knitting the shoulder portions or yoke less elastic than the body, and sufficiently so to prevent its drawing or being pulled out 0f shape. l
The body portionA is knitted-in a stitch I and of a quality of yarn,Worsted, or other material suitable to producea body of the desired elasticity, in order that the garment may t closely to the body of the wearer Without folds or wrinkles; but the shoulder portion or yoke B is knitted either in a closer stitch, a firmer stitch produced by increase of tension, or in the saine or a different stitch, but of different material or quality of material.
It is immaterial in which of the several Ways the greater lirmness or the decreased elasticity is secured, the invention consisting, broadly, in an article of apparel possessing the peculiarity noted. The inelastic or comparatively inelastic portion may extend from the point where the sleeves join the body to the neck, or may pass more or less around the neck, and may be varied in width, as desired, or as the particular use for which the garment is intendedmay demand.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is`-.-
A knit garment having an elastic body portion and a comparatively inelastic shoulder portion or yoke integral therewith.
