Description

PATENTED APR. 24, 1906.
F. A. STEGNER.
TOBACCO PIPE.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 14, 1905.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 24, 1906.
Application filed September 14,1905. Serial No. 278,407.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. STEG- XER, a citizen of theUnited States of America, and a resident of Cincinnati, county of Hamilton, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in T obacco- Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is a tobaccopipe having a stem which is made of absorbent material and which may be disconnected readily from the bowl and mouthpiece to be laid aside for airing and drying, and which may then be put in position for use with ease and celerity. This object is attained by the means illustrated in the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a central longitudinal view through a pipe embodying my invention. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are detail perspective views of the mouthpiece, stem, and bowl, respectively.
Referring to the parts, bowl A has a short annular flange a, which surrounds a nipple a, through which smokeassage a is made. Mouthpiece B has a simi ar flange b and nippie 1), surrounding its smoke-channel. Stem C is made from an absorbent material, preferably paper, pulp, or cork. It has a central longitudinal smoke-channel c, which is sli htly enlarged at each end to fit over the nipp es a l and b. The ends of the stem are tapered to fit snugly within the flanges a and b.
It is seen that the stem is pushed snugly into place within the flange of the bowl readily, and that the mouthpiece is as readily fitted snugly over the other end of the stem, which when it becomes moist with nicotin l may be removed readily from the bowl and mouthpiece, put aside for airing, and be re placed by a fresh stem. I have found that a short airing thoroughly cleanses one of these stems, and that it then may be used again.
What I claim is A ipe consisting of a bowl having a short annu ar flange surroum'ling a nipple through which the smoke-passage is made, the bowlflange and nipple being formed integral a mouthpiece having a similar flange and niple and a stem of" absorbent material with a ibngitudinal smoke-passage and having its ends shaped to fit within the flanges of the. bowl and the mouthpiece and having the end of its smoke-passage formed to fit over the nipples.
