Description

PATENTED APR. 3, 1906.
FLy 2 fllewy. @5' [ZZZ'M 5 M6; MM'Q W. E. MESSIG.
GARMENT HANGER.
APPLICATION FILED FEB 28 1905 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER E. MESSIG, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- THIRD TO FRED A. RICHTER AND ON E-THIRD TO HERMAN A. RICHTER,
OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
GARMENT-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 3, 1906.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I,WALTER E. MEssIe, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment- Hangers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved garment-hanger; and to this end it consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described, and defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, showing the improved garment-hanger folded out ready for use. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the garment-hanger shown in Fig. 1, with some parts broken away. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken approximately on the line a x of Fig. 1, with the link shown in a different position; and Fig. 4 is a view in side elevation, showing the garment-hanger folded up, with some parts removed.
The numeral 1 indicates a supportinghook, which is provided with depending spring-legs 2, to the lower ends of which are pivoted spring clamping-strips 3, arranged in pairs projecting in opposite directions from their pivots and tied together at their outer ends by approximately U-shaped spring-rods 4. The opposite angular portions of the U- shaped rods 4 are connected by chains 5 or other suitable flexible connections to eyes 6, formed by wire sections twisted about the upper ends of the spring-legs 2 at their unction with the hook 1. A sliding link 7 embraces and works frictionally upon the spring legs 2. When said link 7 is forced upward on said legs, as shown. in Fig. 1, the said legs and clamping-strips 3 spring apart, as shown in Fig. 2, thereby leaving a long opening or space between the said clamping-strips 3, which extends from the outer portion of one U-shaped rod 4 to the outer portion of the other of said rods 4 and into which elongated space a portion of a garment which is to be held may be inserted. This unobstructed space between the clamping members or strips extending, as it does, past the pivotjoints between the several parts I believe to be a new feature in a device of this character.
The waistband of a dress or skirt or the legs of trousers may be laid flatwise between the clamping strips 3 and will be tightly pressed thereby when the link 7 is slid downward on the legs 2, as shown in Fig. 3. A vest or a coat, or both, are adapted to be hung upon the chains 5 and upon the outer portions of the U-shaped connecting-rods 4. The device therefore serves as a support for all parts of a suit of clothes, and an overcoat may of course be added, when desired.
The device is capable of being folded into small s ace, as illustrated in Fig. 4, and hence is capa le of being readily carried in a small grip, as may be required by tourists or other persons traveling from lace to place.
The device is of small cost and in practice has been found strong, durable, and efficient for the purposes had in view.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows:
1. In a garment-hanger, the combination with a pair of spring-legs, and means for supporting the same, of a air of clamping-strips independently pivoted to each of said legs, leaving an unobstructed space between the said two legs, and means for forcing said clamping-strips onto a garment placed between them, substantially as described.
2. In a garment-support, the combination with a pair of spring-legs, provided at their upper ends with a supporting device, of clamping-strips pivoted to the lower ends of said legs, in oppositely-projecting pairs, the outer ends of said pairs of clamping-strips being connected by approximately U-shaped spring members, flexible connections between the upper portions of said legs and the outer portions of said U shaped members, and means for forcing said clamping-strips onto a garment placed between them, substantially as described.
3. In a garment-support, the combination with a pair of spring-legs 2, having at their and the upper portions of said spring-legs 2, upper end a hook 1, and a link 7 slidable on substantially as described. 10 said legs, of the clamping-strips 3 pivoted to In testimony whereof I afiix my signature the lower ends of said legs, with a clearancein presence of two Witnesses.
space between the two pivots, the U-shaped WALTER E. MESSIG. spring-sections 4 connecting the ends of said Witnesses: clamping-strips 3, and flexible connections ROBERT C. MABEY,
between the outer portions of said sections 4 F. D. MERCHANT.
