Description

UNITED STATES PATENT @FFICE.
FIREPROOF AND WATERPROOF COM POSITION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 27, 1906.
Application filed July 16, 1903. Renewed August 12, 1905. Serial No. 274,014.
To rill whom it Wmy concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD CovINGToN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fireproof and l/Vaterproof use, the composition being ordinarily placed upon the market in sacks, bags, or similar receptacles.
The composition is ordinarily placed upon the market in four different grades, grade 1 being the finest and grade 4 the coarsest. Grade No. 1 is mixed with water and brought to the consistency of plaster and applied with a trowel. When dry, it forms a cement and is well adapted for use in connection with safety vaults and fireproof buildings. It may also be used for roofing and floors, being both fire and water proof and non-heat conducting. Grade No. 2 is combined with pitch or its equivalent. The pitch is spread over the surface to be covered or treated, and the composition is'then sifted over the pitch, adhering thereto and forming a fire and water proof coating. Grades Nos. 3 and 4,
which are coarser, are applied in the same manner as grade No. 2 and are especially designed for the protection of iron, wood, water and gas pipes, bridge-timbers, warehouses, water flumes, powder magazines, docks, wharves, piles, pier-timbers, and the like, rendering the same fire and water proof.
In grade No. 1 the ingredients are mixed with water and combined in about the fol lowing proportions: mica, fifty per cent; burnt gypsum, twenty-five per cent; silica, fifteen per cent; graphite, five per cent; mica-schist, five per cent.
In grade No. 2 the ingredients are combined with pitch or its equivalent in about the following proportions: mica, seventyfive per cent; silica, ten per cent. graphite, ten percent. mica-schist, five per cent.
In grades Nos. 3 and 4, which are combined with pitch or its equivalent, the ingredients are combined in about the following prop ortions: micaschist, forty per cent. mica, thirty per cent. silica, twenty per cent. graphite, ten per cent.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described composition of matter consisting of burnt gypsum, mica, silica, gra hite and mica schist, substantially as am: for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD COVINGTON.
Witnesses:
THOMAS H. JENKINS, ERNEST H. COLE.
