CASSELMAN of the city of Fort Dodge, county of ⁇ Vebster, and State of Iowa, have invented a new, useful, and improved composition of matter or compound for calcimining, and for protecting, beautifying, and preserving all surf-aces, such as walls and ceiling, whether of brick, stone, wood, metal, plaster, or other materials.
- My composition or compound consists of the following ingredients, combined in the proportions stated, viz: I take of pulverized pariswhite or whiting, thirty pounds; of ground marble or marble-dust, twenty pounds; of pulverized or ground gypsum rock thirty pounds. These three ingredients are thoroughly mixed together and the Whole mass is subjected to strong heat until thoroughly cooked or calcincd and then cooled. I then add the following chemicals: of pulverized borax, five pounds; of sulphate of zinc, four pounds; of pulverized alum, four pounds; of pulverized or gound glue, seven pounds. The Whole mass is then thoroughly mixed together and ground very fine.

COMPOUND FOR OALCIMINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 444,776, datedJanuary 13, 1891.
Application filed December 20, 1890. Serial No- 375.298. (N0 specimens.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. CASSELMAN, of the city of Fort Dodge, county of \Vebster, and State of Iowa, have invented a new, useful, and improved composition of matter or compound for calcimining, and for protecting, beautifying, and preserving all surf-aces, such as walls and ceiling, whether of brick, stone, wood, metal, plaster, or other materials.
My composition or compound consists of the following ingredients, combined in the proportions stated, viz: I take of pulverized pariswhite or whiting, thirty pounds; of ground marble or marble-dust, twenty pounds; of pulverized or ground gypsum rock thirty pounds. These three ingredients are thoroughly mixed together and the Whole mass is subjected to strong heat until thoroughly cooked or calcincd and then cooled. I then add the following chemicals: of pulverized borax, five pounds; of sulphate of zinc, four pounds; of pulverized alum, four pounds; of pulverized or gound glue, seven pounds. The Whole mass is then thoroughly mixed together and ground very fine. For use sufiicientboiling-water is added to the compound to reduce it to the consistency of paint or calcimine. It is then applied with a brush, like paint or calcimine, when it slowly sets or dries firm and smooth, forming a hard and durable surface that may be applied, any number of coats, one over an other, to any degree of thickness Without scaling, chalking, or pealing off. Any desirable tint or color may be given to the compound at any time before using.
The effect of the glue and borax is to delay or retard the setting or drying of the mixture, so it may be applied with a bru h at leisure, as in painting or calcimining. The effect of the sulphate of zinc and alum is to clarify the glue and render it odorless and to cause it to crystallize and render it durable, and to increase the density, hardness and brilliancy of the surface, so that it may be washed or cleaned with clear water without injury.
This composition or compound makes a good and durable coating for wood, metal, stone, brick, or plaster, and Will set firmly on all surfaces.
I do not claim the use of glue or borax as my invention, it having been in use for many years in compounds of chalk, lime, and other materials.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described compositionor compound,to be used in admixture of boiling-hot water as a paint or calcimine for covering walls, ceilings, &c., consisting of pulverized whiting, marble-dust, ground gypsum rock, borax, sulphate of zinc, alum, and glue, the materials specified being mixed in the proportions substantially as hereinbefore set forth, and ground to a fine powder.
