PATENTED MAR. 13, 1906.

PIPE.
' APPLIGATION FILED APRA, 190s.
2/94 [Me we a UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
CHARLES E. ONGLEY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y
I I PIPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
'ratented. March 13, 1906.
Application filed April 4, 1905. Serial No. 253,752.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. ONGLEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have lnvented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipes, of which the following is a s ecification.
. strong on account of the ifliculty expenenced in properly cleaning them. As a result of these dlsagreeable features pipe-smoking is often entirely given up in avorof cigars and cigarettes, thus greatly increasing the cost of smoking.
Therefore my invention has for its object to obviate these disagreeable features by providing a'stem for "PIPES having a circuitous groove or channel so as to give the smoke time to cool off before reaching the mouth and by providing this channel with a'removable cover or casing so as to allow free access thereto for the urpose of cleaning, thus ren derin it possib e to provide a short-stemmed pipe 'aving all the advantages of a long stemmedgplpebut with none of the disa vanta es, and also making it possible to easily eep apipe sweet and clean.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pipe provided with my improved stem. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the stem removed. 7
In all the.figures of the drawings illustrating my invention like reference characters indicate corresponding parts. I
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the bowl of the pipe, which is of ordinary construction, 2 my im roved stem, and 3 the mouthpiece, alsov o ordinary construction.
The stem, which may be made of rubber or other suitable material, is provided with a shortscrew-threaded bore 4 in one end to receive the. screw-threaded projection 5 on the bowl, a screw-threaded bore 6 inthe other end to receive the screw-threaded projection 7 on the mouthpiece, and the exterior surface with an open spiral groove forming a circuitous channel 8, connected at one end by a hole 9 with the bore of the bowl and at the other endby a hole 10 with the bore of the mouthpiece. A removable cover or casing 11, preferably of flexible elastic material, but which may be of any other suitable material, surrounds the stem, thereby forming the outer Wall of the channel, and its ends are secured to the stem b means of caps 12, of metal or other suitabfe material.
When the pipe is being used, the smoke passes from the bowl through the hole 9 into and around the circuitous channel 8 and therefrom into the mouthpiece through the hole 10.
I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise detail and arrangement of parts shown and described. but reserve the rig t to all modifications within the scope of my invention.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is p 1. A pipe provided with a stem having an open circuitous smoke-channel in its exterior and a surrounding casing of elastic material formin the outer wall of said channel, sub
stantia ly as described.
2. A stem for pipes provided with a circuitous smoke-channel in its exterior and a removablesurrounding casing of elastic material formin the outer wall of said channel,
substantial y as described.
' 3. A stem for pipes having a screw-threaded bore in each end, an open circuitous smokechannel in its exterior surface, holes connecting said bores with the ends of the smoke channel and aremovable surrounding casing of elastic material forming the outer wall of said channel, substantially as described.
4. A pipe comprising a stem having a I screw-threaded bore in each end, an open circuitous-smoke-channel-in its exterior cir- .cumference, holes connecting said bores with the ends of said smoke-channel, a bowl having a screw threaded rojection engaging the bore in one end of t e stem, a mouthpiece having a screw-threaded rojection engaging the bore'at the other en of-the stem and a removable surrounding casing of elastic material forming the outer Wall of said channel, Signed at New York, in the county of New substantially as described. York and State of New York, this 1st day of 5. A stem for pi es provided with an open April, A. D. 1905. circuitous SIIlOkB-(EHHIIICl in its exterior and CHARLES E.
