Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed June 21, 1905. Serial No. 266,207-
.lo all w/wm it III/(by concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED ERNEST MAC- LACHLAN, of the city of Montreal, Province of Quebecflanada, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar Extinguishers and Protectors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to cigar extinguishers and protectors; and the object is to provide an inexpensive device by which a partiallysmoked cigar may be quickly extinguished and preserved until the smoker is ready to [in ish the part that remains.
It is often found necessary when entering a street-car or a residence or between acts at a theater to throw away the unsmoked portion of a cigar, as the odor becomes oflensive if a partially-burned cigar is carried loosely in the pocket. By the use of my device, which consists of a hollow cap and an elastic tube, the burning end of the cigar is inserted into the cap, and the elastic tube is pulled over a portion of the cigar, so that air is excluded and the fire immediately extinguished. The cap may then be placed in the vest-pocket and the cigar preserved without any disagreeable odor.
In the drawings which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the elastic tube. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the cap. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the device, showing the elastic tube rolled up on the cap. Fig. A is a plan vidw of the device shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the device with a cigar inserted in the cap.
Referring to the parts, A represents a hollow cap of any suitable material closed at its apex and provided toward its open end with an exterior annular groove A. The edge A of the groove adjacent the open end of the cap is slightly larger in circumference than the opposite edge, and the cap tapers slightly from the groove toward the open end, as shown at A.
B is a tube of rubber or other suitable material open at both ends and slightly tapered toward its upper end, as shown at B. The tube terminates at both ends in thickened rings B and B A cigar C is shown in Fig. 5. The
tapered end of the tube is stretched over the open end of the cap until the thickened ring B fits into the groove A, and the tube is then rolled from its opposite end around the ring B until it assumes the position shown in Figs. 3 and A. In this position it is prevented from unrolling by the enlarged edge A and may be carried in the pocket ready for use.
l/Vhen it is desired to extinguish a lighted cigar and preserve the part that remains, the burning end is inserted in the open end of the cap and the elastic tube unrolled over the cigar, as shown in Fig. 5. The air is thus entirely excluded and the fire is almost immediately extinguished. inserted may then be carried in the pocket until it is desired to smoke the part that remains.
My invention is simple and inexpensive in construction and economicalin use.
Having thus described my invention so that the same may be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which it appertains, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is
1. A cigar extinguisher and protector comprising a hollow cap closed at its apex and having an exterior annular groove near its open end, in combination with an elastic tube provided at its ends with thickened rings, one of said rings being adapted to lit into the annular groove of the cap, substantially as described.
2. A cigar extinguisher and protector, comprising a hollow, conical cap, having an exterior annular groove adjacent its open end, in combination with an elastic tube having one end adapted to fit into the annular groove of the cap, substantially as described.
3. In a cigar extinguisher and protector, a hollow, conical cap having an'exterior annular groove near its open end, in combination with an elastic tube, tapered at one end and terminating in a thickened ring adapted to fit into the annular groove of the cap, the other end being adapted to roll back upon itself toward the top, substantially as described.
4:. In combination, a hollow, conical cap having an exterior annular groove so formed that the edge adjacent the open end of the cap is slightly larger in circumference than the opposite edge, and an elastic tube, tapered at one end and.terminating in thickened rings, the tapered end being adapted to fit over the The cap with the cigar annular groove of the cap, substantially as deed to partially envelop the cigar, substantially scribed. as described. 10
