To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, J ACOB O. KIRsoH and JOHN J. I-IARTMAN, citizens of the United States, and residents of Granite, inthe county of Ohaffee and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Bucket-Dumping Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a device for dumping a mining-bucket which has been elevated through a mine-shaft.
The object of the inve'ntion is to produce a device of this class which will operate easily and simply to efiect the dumping of the bucket, the operation being effected without necessitating the seizing of the bucket.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter, and definitely set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is a vertical section through the device, certain parts being shown in elevation; and Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the bucketholder and showing contiguous parts for supporting and operating the same.
Referring more particularly to the parts, 1 represents the upper extremity of a mineshaft, above which there is placed the usual platform 2. At one side of this platform a chute 3 is placed, in which a bucket 4: is supposed to be dumped. In the platform 2 an opening 5 is provided just above the shaft and through which the bucket 1 may pass, as will be readily understood. The bucket is supported by a cable or rope 6, which passes through a sheave 7, said sheave being attached to the horizontal beam 8 of a gallows 9.
In applying our invention between the gallows and chute we provide a stand or post 10, the said post being formed of a pair of suitable studs or scantlings 11, which are stepped in the platform, as indicated, and these scantlings are connected by planking 12, which constitutes the body of the stand. Upon the upper extremities of the scantlings 11 bearings 13 are formed, and in these bearings a shaft 14: is rotatably mounted. To the body of the shaft 1 1 between the scantlings 11 the bucket-holder 15 is rigidly attached, the same comprising a pair of parallel bars 16, the inner extremities whereof are curved inwardly,
-so as to present converging horns 17, as indicated, and these horns terminate in upwardlyprojecting hooks 18. Upon the extremity of the shaft 1 1 an arm 19 is rigidly attached, and to this arm is attached a link 20, whichpreferably extends across beneath the gallows, as indicated in Fig. 1. At a suitable point on the platform a quadrant 21 is mounted, with which cooperates a lever 22, andto this lever is pivotally attached the aforesaid link 20. The quadrant 21 is provided, as usual, with notches 23, these notches corresponding to the two possible positions of the bucket-holder. A locking-bolt 24E cooperates with the notches 23 and is controlled by means of a finger-lever 25 near the handle of the lever 22, as will be readily understood.
When the lever 22 is held in the position shown in Fig. 1, the bucket-holder 15 lies in a substantially vertical position and removed from the path of the bucket, being elevated into the space above the shaft. W'hen, however, the lever 22 is thrown into the position in which it is shown in dotted lines, the upper extremity of the bucket-holder 15 will be projected into the path of the bucket, so that if the bucket were drawn up sufliciently before operating the bucket-holder the bucket could be allowed to descend upon the bucket-holder, as indicated in. the dotted lines in Fig. 1. The bucket would then be allowed to slide down the bucket-holder and its contents would be dumped into the chute 3. In order to enable the bucket to be dumped as suggested, its lower edge is provided with a ring 26, which is removed from the body of the bucket a short distance, as indicated, being attached thereto by integral studs 27. As the bucket slides down it will be observed that the hooks 18 project into the path of this ring and will eventually engage the ring, so as to arrest the sliding movement of the bucket upon the bucket-holder. WVhen this occurs, the bucket will rotate about the hooks and its upper end will become depressed, as indicated in the dotted lines in Fig. 1, in such a way as to dump its contents into the chute. In order to form a stop to limit the rotation of the bucket outwardly in dumping, we provide the adjacent face of the body 12 of the stand with a recess 28, the said recess being disposed in a suitable position to receive the edge of the ring 26, which lies opposite to the point thereof engaged by the hooks 18. As soon as the bucket is dumped in the manner suggested the line or cable 6 is drawn in again, and this operates to right the bucket and draw the same upwardly into the space above the bucket-holder. The lever 22 is then operated to return the bucket-holder to its normal upright position, whereupon the bucket is allowed to descend again by gravity into the shaft.
The device described is evidently of very simple construction and affords means for dumping the bucket in a sense automatically, inasmuch as it is not necessary for the bucket to be grasped in the hands. In this way the operation of dumping the bucket is very quickly effected.
WVhile we have described the device as useful for dumping a mining-bucket, it could be used for dumping buckets in various operations, as in filling water-casks from a well.
Having thus described our invention, We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a bucket-dumping device, in combination, a bucket-holder and means for moving the same into an inclined position in the path of a descending bucket, said bucket-holder having hooks at the lower extremity thereof adapted to engage the lower edge of the bucket.
2. In a bucket-dumping device in combination, a pivotally-supported bucket-holder, means for holding the same in an inclined position, a bucketadapted to descend upon said bucket-holder when held in an inclined position, said holder having hooks at the lower extremity thereof, and said bucket having a ring adapted to engage said hooks to form a point of rotation to dump said bucket.
3. A bucket-dumping device, comprising in combination, a stand, a bucket-holder r0- tatably mounted on said stand and having a pair of parallel bars with converging lower extremities, said converging lower extremities terminating in hooks, means for holding said bucket-holder in an inclined position and a bucket adapted to descend upon said bucketholder and having a ring attached to the bottom thereof adapted to engage said hooks.
