a citizen of the United States, residing at Galion, inthe county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inHoisting and Dumping Mechanism, of which the' following is a specification. V
This application isa division of an application filed by me April 8, 1914, Serial N 0. 830,469. r
The invention relates to hoisting and dumping mechanism, ence to means for preventing material being wasted by scattering from a dumping car into a pit and also has reference to means for covering the pit when the apparatus is not in use.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, fully described, the novel features being subsequently particularly pointed out in the claim following the description.
In the drawings: Figure l'is an end elevation of a hoistinganddumping mechanism showing my improvements in position; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the frame embodying the particular improvements forming the subject-matter of this application.
The apparatus to which my invention relates embodies a pit l which is provided at the side of a railway track 2 and into which the contents of a dumping car are discharged through a chute 3 having a spout i and a cut-off 5. A bucket 6 is mounted upon a cable 7, which cable is secured to a carriage 8 mounted upon a track 9 which is disposed above a bin 10 arranged at a point adjacent the car tracks 2 and into which the material is discharged from the bucket 6.
The several parts of the apparatus thus enumerated may be of any well-known and preferred construction, and the general operation of the same is well known, the mate rial being transferred from the car through the chute 3 and spout 4 to the bucket 6 which is then lifted to the carriage 8 and caused to travel along the track 9 to a position over the bin 10 when it is discharged. The bucket is then returned to its position at the bottom of the pit 1, as will be readily understood.

trolled through levers 11 and 12, respectively, and the said levers are mounted upon a frame above the. pit and adjacent the car track and connected with the spout and cutoff respectively by links 13 and 14. The
frame upon which the levers are mounted comprises standards 15 and 16, the lower portions of which are connected by boards WORKS AND 17 secured to and extending between the,
standardsand secured upon a base 18 by hinges 19, the said base 18 being. disposed upon the ties which form part of the bed of thetracks 2 and being disposed close to the tracks and adjacent the mouth of the pit. It will be readily understood that the standards l5 and 16 are disposed between the track and the pit and in a vertical plane substantially parallel with the track. The levers l1 and 12 are pivoted upon one of the standards and are adapted to be held in their raised positions by being engaged over suitable hooks or other devices, indicated at 20, upon the co-acting standards.
It will be readily noted that, inasmuch as the frame, consisting of the standards and the boards 17 secured thereto, is connected to the base by hinges, it may be swung to an upright position, as shown in the drawings, to permit the movement of the bucket into or out of the pit or it may be swung outwardly and downwardly so as to extend over the pit and thereby prevent workmen or persons passing near the pit accidentally dropping into the same and being injured.
'The frame will be supported in its upright position by a brace 21 pivoted to the frame and extended down into the pit, the free end ofthe brace being provided with a notch 22 adapted to engage a pin or stud 23 on the side wall of the pit, as shown in Fig. 1. When the frame is in its upright position, any material which may happen to fall over the side of the dumping car will be prevented from thereby being lost, it-being understood that the several working parts are so arranged that material passing into the pit will-not drop into the bucket unless it should be in the Vertical plane of the bucket and, consequently, in order to assure material passing into the bucket, it should flow through the discharge spout 4.
The frame herein shown and described is extremely simple in its construction and will passing into the pit andating levers for the cut-off and the spout;

it should happen that the links connectlng the levers with the spout or cutbfl should be of such length that frame to swingdown flat upon the surface of the ground at the sides of the pit, such action would merely increase the value of the frame as a guard to prevent persons falling into the pit, as it would then present more or less of an obstruction to prevent them reaching the pit.
