TO ALL WI'IOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, W; II. CARPENTER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement inForm-Blocks for Shaping and Finishing Baskets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact'description-of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciicatiominwhich- Figure l represents a vertical section f a form-block constructed according to my improvement, and
Figure 2 represents a plan of the same as seen from above.y i
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures. A Y
This invention is more especially designed to facilitate the removal of finished 'basketsfrom the block :or former upon which they are placed in the operation of manufacture, and to this end it consists in anovel coustructon of aform-block, composed of movable parts or sections, so combined with a supporting-ring and an opmating-wedge, or their equivalents, as to -provide an eilicient means of securing the desired result.
In order that others 'may be betterenabled to understand the construction and operation of this improvement, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
A represents a stand, of any suitable construction, in the centre of which is placed a vertical shaft, B, the upper end of which is made tapering, so as to constitute a conical wedge, the lower vend of` which is connected with a treadle, C, by means of which the. said shaft may be forced upward. v Y
D-is a ring, sustained at a suitable distance. above the standA-by'rods, b, and the centre of which is directly over the centre of the conical wedge B.
E E are movable parts or sections, thrcrc or more parts of which when united compose the form-block.. Each of these movable-sections E is provided with a groove, c, cut in the under side of the top or horizontal portion,
v near the inner surface of its'perpendi'eular walls, and designed to receive that portion of the ring D upon which the said section Vis sustained when the' apparatus is in use. Each section E is also provided with an inwardlyextending base-piece, d', into which is'cut a slot or openingfgv, which passes over one of the upright rods b, lthereby retaining thc said section in place upon the stand, p p
7L is a groove, cut in the outer surface of the sections, near their lower extremities, forV reception of the basket-hoop.v V i In using this invention, the basket-hoop is rst placed in the groove L, and the basket is then placed upon and around the sections E, the combined external form of which corresponds to that-which it is intended to give the basket. The basket is then secured to the hoop in the usual manner, after which the shaft or conical wedge B is forced upward by-means of the treadle G, and the .tapering end'ot' said shaft B forcing apart the lower portions ofthe sections'E, causes them -toexpand against theA internal surface'of the basket withsuch pressure that the continued upivard movementof the shaft will lift the sections E, with the basket thereon, away from the ring D, so that the shaped and finished basket may bereadily removed from the apparatus.
What I claim as my invention, anddesire to secure by LettersPatent, isl rThe combination of thc expanding or movable sections E, the supporting-ring D,`and the conical wedge B,
substantially as and for the purpose 'herein specified.
. W. H. CARPENTER.
