Description
No. 804,224. PATENTED NOV. 14, 1905. M.. HARWELL. COMBINED STATEMENT BLANK AND ENVELOP- APPLIOATION FILED A1 n 7.1904.
MACE HARVVELL, OF QUANAH, TEXAS.
COMBINED STATEMENT-BLANK AND ENVELOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 14, 1905.
Application filed April '7, 1904. Serial No. 202,083.
To a/ZZ whom it may con/cern:
Be it known that I, MACE HARwELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quanah, in the county of Hardeman and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Combined Statement-Blank and Envelop, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined statev ment-blank and envelop.
The object of the invention is in a simple and practical manner to save time, material, and measurably to lessen the labor incident to the rendition of monthly or other statements.
With the above and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists, generally stated, in a combined statement-blank and envelop comprising a signature having its upper portion provided with a space to receive an appropriate heading indicating the character of the statement and with a suitably-ruled field bearing debit and credit columns. The ends of the signature or blank are folded to form flaps which will constitute the ends of the envelop, and one side of the blank is formed into a sealing-Hap of the usual or any preferred contour and is adapted to be secured over the back of the signature to hold the blank in envelop form. The back of the signature is provided with suitable data, such as is usually imprinted upon envelops, such as the name of the sender, a notice to return the matter to the sender after a specified time, and also directions as to opening the envelop. Under the procedures in vogue the rendition of a statement requires the employment of two pieces of stationery-namely, the statement and the envelop-and each of these re uire the writing thereon of the name and ad ress of the individual or firm for whom the statement is intended. By the employment of the'device of the present invention but a single piece of stationery is required and only one address of the firm or individual to receive it, this address being written on the outside of the signature when folded to present an envelop.
In addition the envelop may be employed for inclosing checks, debit or credit slips, or receipts, so that the device subserves the dual function of a statement and of an envelop. f
The invention consists, further, in the novel arrangement of a combined statementblank and envelop, as Will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts, there is illustrated one form of embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being understood that the elements therein exhibited may be varied or changed as to shape, proportion, and exact manner of assemblage Without departing from the spirit thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a .View .of the blank or signature, the folding-lines being indicated by dots. Fig. 2 is a View exhibiting the first fold, wherein the end flaps are shown as folded over the body of the statement. Fig. 3 is a view exhibiting the second fold, wherein the side of the blank is shown folded over the end iiaps, thus forming the body of the envelop. Fig. 4 is a view exhibiting'the third fold, wherein the side or sealing flap is shown as folded over the side of the body. Fig. 5 is a view exhibiting the front of the combined blank and envelop and ready for mailing.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings the statementblank is exhibited as it appears before being folded, the folding-lines being indicated by a, b, @,and d. The blank is made from a sheet of any preferred kind of paper and is provided at one end with a field or space l to receive a heading indicating the nature of the statement andname ofthe firm from which it is sent, together with any other printed matter that may be desired, the said field extending from the folding-line a to the top of the statement. appropriately ruled by vertical and horizontal lines into debit and credit columns and extends from the folding-line d to the opposite edge of .the blank, so that the body is rectangular in shape. l
The ruling and heading herein illustrated are particularly adapted for use by banks; but it is to be understood that any other form of heading or ruling may be employed to adapt it for any mercantile use. On one side of the blank is a sealing-flap 3, having a gummed edge 4, the flap being of any shape that may be desired.
In the use of the device after the statement has been properly made out the end flaps 5 and 6 are folded on the lines a and b The body 2 ofthe blank isv IOO IIO
and present the structure shown in Fig. 2. The folds thus made include the terminals of the sealingflap, and thus protect the ends of the envelop from being tampered with Without damaging the structure. This Will be found of importance, and, further, by thus including portions of the Ilapterminals the structure When folded to form an envelop Will be reinforced at its ends. The side flap 7 is then folded on the line c over the end iaps 5 and 6, as shown in Fig. 3, thus forming the body of the envelop, in which may be inclosed any matter desired, as checks, debit or credit slips, or receipts. To complete the envelop, the side or sealing flap 3 is folded over the side flap 7 and is secured thereto by the gummed edge 4, as usual, as shown in Fig. 4. The structure now presents an envelop of the ordinary appearance, as shown in Fig. 5, and on the front side is placed the address of the person to receive the statement. This side of the envelop may contain printed matter usual to envelops, such as the name and address of the sender, a notice to the post-office to return the statement after a certain time has elapsed, and, if desired, directions as to how the envelop shall be opened.
It Will be seen from the foregoing description that While the device of this invention is exceedingly simple of construction it Will be found of the highest efficiency in use and Will in a practical manner accomplish the objects for which it is designed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- A combined statement-blank and envelop comprising a rectangular body, one edge be ing provided with a sealing-flap extending throughout the entire length of the blank, and the tWo ends of the blank being provided with flaps, the upper one of which constitutes a heading for the body and extends into the sealing-flap, and the lower one of which also extends into the sealing-flap, the end flaps being adapted to be folded transversely of the body to form the ends of the envelop, and to include the terminal portions of the sealing-flap, and one side of the bodybeing adapted to be folded longitudinally of its length upon the inturned end flaps to complete the envelop.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my oWn I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
MACE HARWELL.
