PATENTED JUNE 27, 1905.
J. BUFFBLEN.
COLUMN CLAMP.
APPLICATION PIL-BD APR.20,1903.
Patented June 2'?, 1905.
ATENT FFICE.
JOHN BUFFELE, OF MlLlVAUKEE, \VlSCONS1N.
COLUMN-CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 793,049, dated June 27, 1905.
Application filed April 20, 1903. Serial No. 153,378.
To @ZZ 707mm, it 'nlug/0071410770:
Beit known that l, LToi-IN BUFFELEN, a subject of the Queen of the Netherlands, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of VisConSin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Column- Clamps, of which the following a specification, reference being' had to the accompanying drawings. forming a part thereof.
This invention relates to clamps for holding the staves or sections of wood columns together and in place while they are being glued. .lts main objects are to facilitate assembling and gluing the staves or sections of wood columns and to improve the construction and operation of clamps for this purpose. making them readily adjustable for application to columns of different sizes and to different parts of tapered columns.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in the peculiar arrangementand combinations of parts, as hereinafter particularly described` and pointed out in the claims.
ln the accompanying' drawings like letters designate the same parts in the several figures.
Figure l is a plan view and horizontal section on the line l l, Fig. 3, of my improved clamp as applied to a column. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the block to which one end of the flexible clamping-band is attached and in which the clamping-lever is fulcrumed. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the clamp, the lever extension being removed and the handle of the detachable arm on the clamping-block broken away; and Fig. i is a detail view showing the adjustable connection between the two parts or sections of the clampingband.
rf. is a recessed block having' one face fitted to bear against one face of a column and preferably made, as shown in Fig. l, to approximately tit over the corner or angle formed by two adjoining staves or sections.
7; is a lever having a recessed head c, which is fulcrumed to or pivoted in the block fl on a pin l passing vertically through the recess in said block. The lever-head f; is formed or provided on one side with ratchet-teeth c, arranged concentric with the pivot-pin d, and
a pawl j', pivoted at one end on a pin g, passing vertically through the recess in the block a, is adapted to engage with said ratchet-teeth and to prevent the lever-arm from turning backward.
A liexible metallic band composed of two parts or sections /r and is pivotally attached at one end to the block uy and at the other end to the lever-head c. One part of section /i of said band is formed with a series of holes j, and the other part is provided with a stud or button adapted to be engaged with any one of said series of holes, so as to vary the length of the band and adapt it to columns of different sizes, as well as to facilitate placing the clamp upon a column. This band maybe conveniently attached to the leverhead and block, as shown, by looping its ends around pins /and m ,passing vertically through the recesses in said lever-head and block perpendicular or at right angles to the plane of the loop formed by the band. This mode of attachment enables the band to readily adjust itself to a column when drawn taut around it and permits the necessary movement of the lever-head c around its fulcruni or pivot pin l in the block (t to draw the band taut without abruptly bending it.
To facilitate holding the block t in place and drawing the band taut on a column, the block is provided with a detachable arm or handle n. which has a tapered dovetailed shank o fitting a corresponding groove or recess y) in the top of said block, and the lever-arm b is provided with a removable tubular extension or handle q.
To apply the clamp to a column, the stud or button on one part of the flexible band is disengaged Vfrom the other part. The band is then placed around the column, and the pawl f' being' thrown back the lever is turned toward it to separate the end of the band attached thereto from the end of the band attached to the block ai. The stud or button i is engaged with the holej, to which it comes nearest when the band is drawn around the column. The arm or handle n being attached to the block a. and held in one hand and the tubular extension or handle (1 being placed on the lever-arm and held 1n the other hand,
the lever b is turned away from the handle n, thereby drawing the band taut upon the column and binding its staves or sections firmly together. rlhe pawl f, having been turned into position to engage with the ratchet-teeth e on the lever-head c, prevents said lever-head from turning backward, and thus -holds the band taut upon the column, freeing the hands of the operator and permitting the handles n and q to be removed out of the way.
Various changes in minor details of construction may be made without departing from the principle and intended scope of my invention.
I claim- 1. In a column-clamp the combination of a block provided with a handle, a lever fulcrumed to said block, and a flexible metallic band attached at the ends to said block and lever and forming a loop in a plane at right angles to the fulcrum of said lever, substantially as described.
2. In a column-clamp the combination of a black provided with a handle, a lever fulcrumed to said block, and a iiexible metallic band composed of detachably and adjustably connected parts attached, one to said block and the other to said lever, and forming a loop in a plane at right angles to the fulcrum of the lever, substantially as described.
3. In a column-clamp the combination of a block provided with a detachable handle, a lever fulcrumed to said block and provided with a removable extension, and a flexible band attached at one end to said block and at vthe other end to said lever, substantially as described. I
et.. In a column-clamp the combination of a block provided with a detachable handle, a
and the other to said lever and forming a loop in a plane at right angles to the fulcrum of said lever, and a paWl and ratchet adapted to hold said lever against backward movement when the band is tightened on a column, substantially as described.
6. In a column-clamp the combination of a block provided with a detachable handle, a lever fulcrumed to said block and provided with a removable extension and with ratchetteeth, a flexible metallic band composed of detachably and adjustably connected parts which are attached, one to said block and the other to said lever and form a loop in a plane at right angles to the fulcrum of said lever and a pawl pivoted to said block in position to engage with said teeth and prevent backward movement of said lever when the band is tightened on a clamp, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I hereto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN BUFFELEN.
