To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR NIH EN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mitering-Clamps;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i
This invention relates to improvements in clamps and particularly to wood working clamps for gluing together the mitered ends of molding.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a novelly constructed clamp which is particularly adapted for clamping m1- tered oints.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which is adjustable to force the parts of the mitered joint together, and also to engage and rigidly hold the parts in such position.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the clamp in use. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a clamp made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 3 is a top plan-view, a mitered joint being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 4L is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line 4% of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on the line 55 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 6 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view'on the line 6-6 of Fig. 3.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings, 10 represents an elongated frame which is formed with a central longitudinal slot 11, the undersides of the side portions of the frame being formed with the ledges 12. At one end of the frame is an upstanding standard or lug 13, this lug having a longitudinal oppositely tapered bore 14: formed therethrough. Disposed in this bore is a pin 14 through which is formed a transverse threaded opening 15 receiving the screw shaft 15. The screw is thus permitted a vertical locking movement with the pin 14 as the axis. At the opposite end of the frame is an obliquely arranged standard 16, the rear side of which is provided with a strengthening rib 17. A clamping member .18 is disposed on this standard 16 and has the inwardly extending members 19 which interlock with lateral ribs 20, on the standard and slide vertically thereon, this jaw being disposed over the end of the frame, and extending transversely of the frame at an angle of approximately 45 degrees. lhis clamping member is disposed to slide vertically on the standard 16 and is movable thereon by means of a screw 21 which is disposed through a threaded boss 22 carried on the upper end of said standard and is rotatably secured to theclamping member.- The upper end of this screw has a handle 25 for rotating the screw. Disposed against the ledges 12 from the underside of the frame, and extending across the opening 11, is a plate 26, this plate having secured to its upper side a vertical standard 26. The before mentioned screw 15 has its inner end rotatably mounted in a plate 37 adjustably mounted on the rear side of the standard 26, and its opposite end provided with a handle 28 so that by rotating the screw the standard can be moved longitudinally in the slot of the frame toward and away from the member 18. The plate 37 is provided with a vertical elongated slot 38 which receives therethrough a clamping screw 39, this screw being carried by the standard 26. Vertically slidable on the standard 26, is a clamp member 29. This clamp member is in the form of a block, its forward face being arranged transversely and obliquely of the frame at an angle of 45 degrees. The upper end of the standard 26 has a forwardly extending boss 33 directed toward the boss 22 and provided with a vertical threaded opening receiving a screw 30. The lower end of this screw is rotatably secured in the upperside of the block 29 and has on its upper end a handle 31. Thus by turning the screw 30, the block 29 can be moved up and down on the standard 26 away from and toward the frame. At the same time the screw 15 is arranged to move the standard 26 together with the block 29 toward or away from the other member 18. On the upper face at each end of the member 10 and on the plate 26 are the teeth 38.

The clamping member 29 is then moved downwardly by means of the screw SO and causes'the teeth 38 on the plate 26 to bite into the molding'at which time the molding willbe held in position by the coaction ofthe said teeth 38 on the plate 26 and theclamping member 29. The glue is then applied to the mitered ends of the j molding and the screw 15 operated to move themolding which is supported on the plate 26 toward, the piece of, molding which is clamped by the member 1.8 until the mitered V faces-contact at which time the screw 15 is this reason that the plate 37 is made ad- {topics of this patent may be obtained for This piece of molding will thus justable on the standard 26 in the manner previously described.
By raising and lowering the plate 37 the screw 15 can be rocked with the pin 14 so that the point of pressure of the screw can be applied at the point desired. Thus the screw 15 forces the parts of the joint together and the jaws 18 and 29 hold the parts against movement in any direction.
hen it is desiredto apply pressure to various points on the molding, it will only be necessary to loosen the screw 39 and move the plate 37 upwardly on the standard 26', at which time the end of the screw 15 will be raised and the screw rock on its pivot 11. The slot 37 is provided for convenience of insertion ofthe screw head 15. The head of this screw 15 is rounded so that it will not bind against the plate 37 when the plate is moved upwardly.
lVhat is claimed is r In a miter clamp, a frame, a standard formed on one end thereof, a clamping member slidably mounted on said standard, a plate slidably mounted on said frame, a standard formed on said plate, a clamping member on said standard, means for transmitting force to the last mentioned standard to move the same toward the first mentioned standard, and means for adjusting the said first mentioned means in such manner that the point of application of the force to the second mentioned standard may be varied at the will of the operator.
