TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Bc it known that I, DANIEL W'. AYRES, of Sheldon, in the county of Iroquois, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Portable Device for Grinding Tools; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof,whieh will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

This invention relates to a new and improved portable device for grinding tools of-various'kinds, butmore especially for grinding the knives of the sickles of grain and grass-harvesters.

In the accompanying sheet of drawings- Figures 1 and 2 are elevations of my invention.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

A represents a stoel: or frame, which may he constructed similar to a bit-stock, and having a shaft fitted init at right angles, on which a`d1iving-wheel, B, is placed, having two sets of' teeth, a b, one set, a, being on the periphery of the wheel, and parallel with the axis of the same, and the other set, b, being on a bevelled surface at one side of the wheel, near its periphery.

On the outer end of the shaft cl there is secured a conical griudstone'or emery-wheel, D, shown in both figures. Y

The driving-ivheel B has a handle, e, attached, for the convenience of turning it.

l Eitherthe circular grinding-wheel G or the conical grinding-wheel D may be used, as occasion er convenience may require. v

This isr'quite aportable a'air, and may be used for grindingthe knives of harvesters, wit-hout removing thesickle from the machine, theiformer being rendered inoperative by throwing the driving-mechanism out of gear, and then applying the grinding-wheel to the knives, the stoel: beingheld like an ordinary bit-stock, and the wheel B turned by hand. The implement may be carried into the' field, kept in the tool-box of' the machine, and used from time to time, as occasion may require.

In other eases, the stock A may he secured on a table or bench by screws, or any suitable clamp, and the tool applied to either grinding'whecl, C or D, the latter being preferred Vfor grinding the knives of harvesters for sickles. Y i

The relative size of the `gearing should be suchiasrto give the proper speed to the grinding-wheels, which .speed'should be considerably greater than that of the driving-wheel B.

I claim as new, and desire to secure by Iietters Patent- An mplementfor grinding or sharpening tools, composed of a stock; gearing and grinding\\'lieels, one or more, arranged to operate in the manner substantially as shown and described.
