Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed December 12, 1917. Serial No. 206,829.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. Horrns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Dawson, in the county of Richard son, Nebraska, have invented new and use ful Improvements in Disk-Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in disk sharpeners, and has for its object to provide a machine of the character specified by which disks used in Cultivators, harrows and the like may be sharpened, the said disks and the grinding wheel being yieldingly mounted and spring pressed toward each other for the purpose specified, and wherein the supporting frame for the grinding wheel and the disks is adjustable.

In the present embodiment of the invention, the supporting wheels for the disks and the grinder consist of sections 1 and 1 the section 1 having an opening 2 in its side members, which are adapted to receive rods 3 on the section 1, and set screws 4 are provided for engaging the rods to hold the sections in adjusted position.
A shaft 5 is journalcd in the section 1 of the frame, the said shaft being journaled in. one of the side members of the sections, and the shaft is provided at its inner end with a head 6 having a polygonal opening, as shown. Another shaft 7 is journaled in the opposite side member in alinement with the shaft 5, and this shaft 7 has a polygonal portion at its inner end which is adapted to engage the polygonal opening of the head.
The disk 8 to be sharpened is mounted on the shaft 7, and a coil spring 9 is arranged between the disk and the adjacent side member of the frame section 1, the spring acting normally to press the disk toward the head 6. This shaft 7 has a crank 10 at its outer end, by means of which the disk may be rotated when desired. The grinding wheel 11 is mounted upon a shaft 12 which is journaled transversely of the frame in bearing slots 13 in the side members c he sharpsection 1. A pinion 14 is feathered on the shaft adjacent to the grinding wheel, and the pinion meshes with the gear wheel 15 on a driving shaft 16 also journaled in slots 17 in the side members ofthe frame section. This shaft 16 is provided with a crank 18 at its outer end, and the shafts 12 and 16 are connected by a connecting bar 19 in which both shafts are journaled. They are also connected by a yoke or substantially U-shaped bracket consisting of a body 20 and arms 21 and 22. The shafts 12 and 16 are both journaled in the arm 22 of the yoke, and the shaft 16 is journaled in the arm 21 of the yoke. A screw 23 is threaded through a nut 24 held in the end member of the frame section 1 and the inner end of the screw is roiigatably connected with the body of the yo e.
The screw has a crank 25 at its outer end, and it will be evident that when the crank is turned the yoke 21-22 carrying the shafts 12 and 16 and the grinding wheel 11 will be moved toward or from the disk 8, the shafts 12 and 16 moving in the slots 13 and 17. The shaft 12 is provided with a pinion indicated at 26 in Fig. 1, and this pinion meshes with a gear wheel 27 on the shaft 5 for driving the shaft 5 through the shaft 16. This shaft 5 also carries an emery wheel 28 outside of the gear wheel 27. l
A coil spring 29 is arranged between the bar 19 and the pinion 14, and the said spring acts normally to press the grinding wheel 11 toward the disk 8. For different size disks, the frame sections 1 and 1 are adjusted toward or from each other, and by means of the screw 23 it will be evident that the grinding wheel 11 may be moved to the proper position with respect to the disk 8 held by the shafts 5 and 6.
In operation, the shaft 7 is moved outwardly to disengage the inner end thereof from the head 6, and the disk 8 is placed, after which the parts are replaced as shown in Fig. 1. The frame sections are now adjusted with respectto each other, and the grinding wheel is adjusted with respect to the frame section 1 by means of the screw 23. By means of the crank 18 the grinding wheel is turned, and when the gear connection 2627 is used the disk will be rotated in synchronism with the rotation of the grinding wheel. This gear 26 is made removable in order that the driving connection between the driving shaft 16 and the the yoke disk supporting shaft may be released. When the gear 26-27 is not used the disk 8 is rotated to bring the various parts of the periphery thereof in contact with the grinding wheel by means of the crank 10.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Fig. 4, the sharpening disk 35 is mounted upon a shaft 36 which is mounted in slots 37 in the arms 38 of a yoke comprising the said arms and a body 39. The arms 38 of the yoke have other slots 40, which receive a shaft 41, and gear wheels 42 and 43 connect the said shaft with the shaft 36. The shaft 36 and the shaft 41 are journaled in the arms 44 of a yoke comprising the said arms and a body 45. This yoke is arranged between the arms of the yoke 38-39, and a screw 46 is threaded through the body 39 of 39-38, the screw being connected with the body of the yoke 45-44, and by means of a screw which has a handle or crank 47 the yoke may be adjusted with respect to the yoke 3938. The shaft 41 and a shaft 48 are supported by frame members 49, and the yoke 38 39 is adjustable on the shafts 4l48, being held in adjusted position by set screws 50 and 50 which engage the shafts 48 and 41, respectively. A; sprocket wheel 51 is arranged on the shaft 41, and a sprocket wheel 53 is arranged on a shaft 48 which is journaled in the frame members 49, and a sprocket chain 52 connects these wheels 51 and 5.3. The shaft 48 is a part of the cultivator.
I claim:
1. A device of the character specified, comprising a supporting frame, a sectional shaft journaled on the supporting frame, the sections having means for engaging and holding a disk between them for rotation with the shaft, a grinding wheel supporting shaft, a drive shaft, the frame having longitudinal bearing slots in which the said shafts are movable toward and from the disk supporting shaft, a grinding wheel on the grinding wheel supporting shaft, means for rotating the driving shaft, an auxiliary frame in which the two shafts are journaled, a driving connection between the driving shaft and the grinding wheel supporting shaft, a spring normally pressing the grinding wheel toward the disk, and means for moving the auxiliary frame toward and from the disk, and means for rotating the disk supporting shaft.
2. A disk sharpener comprising a supporting frame, means on the frame for support ing and rotating the disk, said frame having pairs of longitudinally extending bearing slots, shafts in the slots, a driving connection between the shafts, an auxiliary frame supporting the shafts, the shaft adjacent to the disk supporting means having a grinding wheel for engaging the disk, the other shaft having means for rotating the same, means for moving the auxiliary frame toward and from the disk, and a spring normally pressing the grinding wheel toward the disk.
3. A disk sharpener comprising a supporting frame, means on the frame for supporting and rotating the disk, said means having pairs of longitudinally extending bearing slots, shafts in the slots, a driving connection between the shafts, an auxiliary frame supporting the shafts, the shaft adjacent to the disk supporting means having a grinding wheel for engaging the disk, the other shaft having means for rotating the same, and means for moving the auxiliary frame toward and from the disk.
4-. A disk sharpener comprising a sec tional supporting frame, one of the sections having means for supporting and rotating the disk to be sharpened, an auxiliary frame mounted on the other section, means for moving the said frame toward and from the disk, a grinding wheel supported by the frame, means for rotating the same, and means for holding the sections of the frame in adjusted position.
5. A disk sharpener comprising a sup porting frame, means on the frame for supporting and rotating the disk to be sharpened, an auxiliary fran'ie, means for moving the said frame toward and from the disk, a grinding wheel supported by the frame, means for rotating the disk, and a driving connection between the grinding wheel and the disk supporting means.

A disk sharpener comprisin a supporting frame, means on. the frame for supporting and rotating the disk to be sharpened, an auxiliary frame, means for moving the aid frame toward and from the disk, a grinding wheel supported by the frame, means for rotating the disk, and yielding means press ing the grinding wheel thwart the disk 7. A disk sharpener con'iprising a sectional frame, means for holding the sections in adjusted position, means for supporting and rotating the disk to be sharpened on one section, a grinding wheel on the other section for engaging the disk, means for rotating the wheel, said disk supporting means comprising a sectional shaft, one section having a head at its inner end provided with a polygonal opening and the other a polygonal portion for passing through the opening of the disk and entering the opening of the head, and a spring between the frame and the disk and pressing the disk toward the head.
