Description

No. 799,762. PATENTED SEPT. 19, 1905. G. N. STEERE.
APPLICATION TILED JUNE 20,1905.
WITNESSE8-. lNvEN-roR. A. 6. Hazenfkowa/ni BY ATTO R N EY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 19, 1905.
Application filed June 20,1905. Serial No. 266,089.
To a. whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE N. STEERE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grans ton, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to combs for human hair intended to retain the former in position upon the head, and has for its purpose a means of insuring the comb against slipping out of engagement with the hair after insertion therein.
A further purpose is to attain the desired end by means of a device which shall be simple, inexpensive, capable of ornamental results, and non-injurious to the engaged strands.
To the above ends my invention consists in an auxiliary hinged or pivoted plate connected to the comb-head and acting in conjunction with the comb-teeth to engage the hair-strands.
Further novel detailed features will appear and be hereinafter claimed.
In the drawings which constitute a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a comb embodying my invention in closed position; Fig. 2, a top plan or edge view of the same; Fig. 3, a front view thereof in open position; Fig. 4, a transverse section of the same on line or a: of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 a similar section on line 3 y of Fig. 3.
Like reference-letters indicate like parts throughout the views.
In the drawings, (4 represents the head or base piece, and b the teeth, of a comb. To the rear margin of the head a is fixed by rivets c or otherwise a hinge-plate d, in which is mounted the hinge-pin a and 'on which is a forwardly-extending tongue f. p
A looking or engaging plate 9 is provided along its lower margin with a plurality of teeth It, directed at right angles to the platebody. A bearing-plate i is secured by rivets for otherwise to the upper central inner face of the engaging plate g and supports the ends of the pin 6. Fixed by a rivet is or by The operation of my new comb is as follows: The comb is while the parts are in the relative positions shown in Figs. 3 and 5 inserted into the hair, and the hair fills the spaces or intervals intermediate the teeth 7) adjacent the head 9, whereupon the elevated hinged plate 9 is forced downwardly against the tension of the spring Z until the lower margin of said plate overlaps and rests against the upper portions of the teeth and the teeth or projections lb, traversing the hair, enter the spaces intermediate the teeth I) and are held in engagement therewith by the spring aforesaid. During the downward movement of the plate g the spring Z bears against the upper side of the tongue f. When, however, the projections in reach a position adjacent to the teeth 6, the spring l bears against the end of the tongue f, and hence operates to press and hold the free edge of the plate g against said teeth 6.
By the described meansthe comb is locked against removal after adjustment in the hair until the wearer desires to manually raise or disengage the plate 9. r -Having described my invention, what I claim 1s- 1. The combination with the head and teeth of a comb; of a plate pivoted to the head in position to overlap the upper portion of the teeth, and having projections on its free edge arranged to enter between the teeth, and spring means for holding the free edge of the plate against the teeth.
2. The combination of the head and teeth of a cbmb, a hinge-plate fixed to the head and having an angular tongue at its free end, a locking or engaging plate connected in apivotal manner to the hinge-plate, and a fiat spring fixed to said locking or engaging plate and having its free end disposed and movable between the locking or engaging plate and the tongue of the hinge-plate.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
