Description

PATENTED SEPT. 19, 1905.
0. L. HARRIBS.
COLLAR PROTECTOR.
APPLICATION rILnn MAY 4, 1905.
UNITED sTArns PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR L. HARRIES, OF BUFFALO. NEW YORK.
' COLLAR-PROTECTOR.
To all whom it may-concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR L. HARRIEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Imrovement in (lunar-Protectors, of which the 'ollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to a protector designed to be worn temporarily over an ordinary collar for preventing its outer sidJ- from becoming soiled.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is capable of ready application and removal and which while being comfortable to the wearer does not detract from the ordinary appearance of the collar.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the protector applied to a collar, including portions of the adjacent garments. Fig. 2 is a perspective rear view of the protector. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the same applied to the collar.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring to Fig. 1, A indicates an ordinary collar, and B a portion of a vest.
The protector consists of a collar-like band C, adapted to surround the ordinary collar A and rovided on its inner side with hooks d or simi ar fastenings, which engage over the upper edge of the collar, and a cape or series of flaps E, attached to the lower edge of the band and adapted to lie between the shirt and the vest or other garment worn over the shirt. The band C, though flexible, is made of a comparatively stiff material, so as to retain its shape, and for this purpose it preferably consists of a core or inner strip e, of eelluloid, covered with silk or similar material. It is desirable to make the band somewhat higher than the ordinary collar, as shown, in order to protect its upper edge, as well as its outer side.
Specification of Letters Patent.
I v Patented Sept. 19, 1905.
Seri o, 258,780-
Thehooks (I prevent downward displacement of the band while the cape holds it from upward displacement. The hooks are preferably arranged a short distance below the upper edge of the band, as shown, so that they are completely concealed by the projecting upper margin of the band. In the construction shown in the drawings the shanks of the hooks are sewed or otherwise secured to the inner sides of the celluloid strip 0, so as to be concealed by the fabric covering of the band, the bills of the hooks passing through openings in the covering, as shown.
The protector is, readily applied by placing its band around the'collar, engaging its hooks over the latter, and tucking the cape under the vest or similar garment overlying the The device can be as readily deshirt. tached by sim ly lifting the band to disengage its hooks rom'the collar, when the cape can be withdrawn from under the vest.
When applied, the rotector lies closely against the collar, causlng no discomfort and presenting as neat. an appearance as an ordinary collar.
I claim as my invention- A protector for the outer side of a collar,
comprising a flexible band composed of an inner strip of stiff material andv a fabric covering, hooks having their shanks secured to the inner side of said strip and concealed by said covering, the bills of the hooks passing inwardly through the covering, and a cap, attached to the lower edge of the band, substantially as set forth. Witness my hand this 27th day of April, 1905.
