I 1 I I I a I j I WITNESSES: INVENTOR By M I? I v. Alforney UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
7 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 25, 1905.
Application filed October 26,190 i. Serial No. 230,057.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT CAMERON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manhole Covers and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to. make and use the same. y
This invention relates to the covers of manholes and other similar objects; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section through a manhole provided with a cover according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
A is the frame of the manhole, and B is a flange or ledge which projects internally and at a little distance below its top edge.
C is the cover, which rests on the said ledge, flange, or projection B. This cover has a stationary lug D at one side, which projects from it and extends below the said flange B. This lug is formed integral with the cover or is otherwise rigidly secured to it.
E is a hole in the cover on the opposite side of its center from the lug D. The upper part at of this hole is recessed, and 6 represents finger-notches in the cover on opposite sides of the hole. The hole E and its recessed portion are preferably rectangular in shape.
F is a removable lug provided with a head f. This lug F is dropped through the hole E into engagement with the flange B, and its head f on ages with the recessed part (1 of the hole, in wliich it fits snugly. These two lugs prevent the cover from being accidentally displaced.
When the cover is to be raised, the removable lug F is first lifted out of the hole by the fingers, and the cover can then be raised by inserting a finger or a hook into the hole E.
What I claim is The combination, with a frame provided with a projecting flange, of a cover which rests on the said flange and which is provided on one side with a lug D which projects under the said flange, said cover having also at its other side a hole E having a rectangular recessed portion d and finger-notches e at the sides of the said recessed portion, and a removable lug F which is dropped loosely through the hole E into engagement with the said flange and which has a rectangular head which fits in the said recess d.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT CAMERON.
