JOSEPHP. KILIAN, OF MTLWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
BOX-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 773,648, dated November 1, 1904. Application filed January 30, 1904. Serial No. 191.269. (N model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH P. KILIAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee. in the county of Milwaukee and State of 'isconsin, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to devices for temporarily locking the cover to a box, so that same cannot be opened without breaking aseal; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, as Will be fully set forth hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the said drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical central sectional View through a box and its cover embodying my said invention, taken on the plane indicated by the line 1 1 in Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse view thereof, taken on the plane indicated by the line 2 2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the cover. Fig. 4 is a detail plan view of a portion of the cover, showing the parts in locked position; and Fig. 5 is adetail perspective view of a portion of the locking device. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the box with cover raised.
Referring by numerals, to the said drawings, 1 represents the box, and 2 the cover. The front and rear walls of the said box are formed on their inner surfaces near the top with two opposed transverse horizontal grooves 3 4, while the cover 2 is provided with two transverse cleats 5 6 on its under side, one of said cleats. 6, carrying a stationary plate or plates 7 having projecting ends for engagement with one of the said box-grooves, 4, while the other cleat, 5, is equipped with a movable plate 8 for engagement with the other box-groove, 3. The preferredconstruction and arrangement of this movable plate and adjacent parts is as follows: The said plate 8 has a vertical bolt 9 projecting upward therefrom through a slot 10 in another plate,
11, secured to the under side of the cleat 5 and through a vertical slot 12 in said cleat and cover and into a circular recess 13 in the cover 2. The plate 11 is formed with guides 14 14, between which and the adjacent surface of the said plate 11 the plate 8 has sliding movement Within the limit of travel of the bolt 9 in the slots 10 and-l2. The plate 11 is furtherprovided with a guide-pin 15, projecting up throughthe slot 12 in the cleat and cover and into the recess 13 in the latter and formed with avertical slot 16 in its upper end for the reception of the tongue 17, projecting from the bolt, which tongue has a hole therethrough.
WVhen it is desired to lock the cover to the box, the wire 19 of a seal 20 is slipped through the said hole and afterward clenched in the seal in a well-known manner, the seal and attached parts all resting in the described recess 13, and same may be covered by a paper seal 21, if desired, all as shown in Figs. 1 and 4.
22 designates a bent spring secured, as shown at 23, to the under side of the cover 2, said spring being first bent downward and then upturned at its free end 24, which latter bears againstthe inner edge of the plate 8, so as to always press the said plate outwardly or beyond the adjacent edge of the plate 11. The box and cover are detachably connected by the hook-rods 25 25, having eyes at one end engaging with staples 26 26 on the under side of the cover 2 and the said rods having movement through other staples 27, secured to the sides of the box 1, and the bent lower ends or hooks 28 of said rods preventing the accidental separation of said box and cover, though permitting detachment when desired, and thus guardingagainst the loss of the said cover. v
The operation of my device will be readily understood from the foregoing description of its construction, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. With the seal and itswire absent the cover can be readily dropped to place, with the bolt 9 drawn back against the guide-pin 15 and the plate or plates 7 in the groove 4, and then the plate 8 is automatically forced away from the guide-pin 15 and into the groove 3 by the spring 22 and the cover fastened in this position and can be locked by the described seal, if desired, in the manner described.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a box-fastener, the combination with a box formed with opposed inner grooves adja cent to the top thereof, of a cover having cleats secured adjacent to the opposed ends of the under side thereof, one of said cleats and the cover being formed with a slot therethrough; a stationary plate secured to the other of said cleats and having a projecting end for engagement with one of said grooves; a slotted plate secured to the slotted eleat, and formed with a horizontal guideway on its under side, and a slotted guide-pin rising from its upper surface and extending through the slot in said cleat; a movable plate supported in said guideway and having a rigid bolt extending up through the slot in the cleat and cover, and a tongue extending from said bolt through the'slot in said guide-pin.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH P. KILIAN.
