Be it known that I, HARRY SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ear-Muffs, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to ear-muffs; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is also designed to serve as a neck-protector and by means of which the ears and back of the neck may be protected from the'cold, a further object being to provide an improved device of this class which may be conveniently carried in the pocket and applied for use whenever desired.

The invention is fully disclosed in the fol lowing specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the sepa-- rate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved ear-muff and neck-protector and the method of using the same; Fig. 2, a perspective View of an ear-muff and neck-protector detached, and Fig. 3 a partial section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.

In the practice of my invention I provide an ear-muff and neck-protector a, which is composed of any suitable fabric and which consists of two similar parts a approximately triangular in form and stitched together vertically at the central back portion of the device, as shown at cf, the object in forming the device of two parts being to give the same proper shape, which could not be conveniently done otherwise, and in order to do this the ends of the separate parts (6 which are connected at (f, are slightly curved. When made in this manner and applied to the head, as shown in Fig. 1, the device incloses the back part of the neck and the cars, and the bottom edge a thereof is given a gradual curve, while the top edge a is approximately straight, so as to form the front corners with which the fastening devices 5 are connected. The fastening devices 5 may be composed of fine wire, 5 tape, or an elastic cord or cords and are connected with the corners of the muff at 6 and if composed of two separate parts the free ends thereof are connected, as shown at 6 this connection being made by means of hooks if 55 the fastening device or devices are composed of wire or by tying the ends of the parts together if composed of tape.

The separate parts a or the edges thereof are so formed as to give the complete article a convex form in cross-section, and the ears and back portion of the neck are fully inclosed thereby or covered thereby when the device is in use, and the top edge a and bottom edge a are preferably bound with tape 5 or other suitable material, and in the top edge 0 is placed a wire 0, which passes entirely around the same, and in the form of construction shown the ends of this wire are projected, as shown at 0 and form a connection for the 7 fastening devices 6.

When the device is in position for use, as shown in Fig. 1, the hat, as indicated in dotted lines, covers the parts 6 and the upper edge of the ear-muff and neck-protector, and 75 the ends thereof extend upwardly in front of the ears, and the wire 0 itself will hold the device in proper position, the fastening devices 6 serving as an additional means for retaining the said device in place. The wire 0, however, is not an absolutely necessary feature, as it will be apparent that the body portion of the device may be so formed and applied when the fastening devices 6 are employed as to remain securely in proper shape and form when 5 in use.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
