PAPER-BAG HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 789,125, dated May 2, 1905. Application filed July 1, 1904. Serial No. 214,979.

To all whom it may concern} Be it known that I, LUTHER EMERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at-Pitts field, in the county of Merrimack and State of New Hampshire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Paper-Bag Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to paper-bag holders.

The principal objects of the invention are to improve and simplify the construction of such devices.

Further objects of the invention are to increase the capacity of such bag-holders and to render them compact in form.

WVith the above and other minor objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed as a practical embodiment of the invention.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bag-holder constructed in accordance with the invention, a number of bags being shown in position. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the improved bag-holder. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on a line at right angles to Fig. 2.

Like reference-numerals indicate corresponding parts in the different views.

The improved bag-holder is constructed, preferably, with a base 1, upon which is mounted a support or upright 2, having side rails 3 4. Attached to the side rails of the support 2 in any suitable manner is a plurality of supporting members 5 and a plurality of spring members 6. Each of the supporting members 5 is formed, preferably, of wire bent to produce horizontal supporting portions 7, an upwardly-extending loop 8, vertical retaining portions 9, and horizontal attaching portions 10, formed with ends 11 11, which are fitted into the side rails 3 and 4 of the upright or support 2. Each of the spring members 6 preferably is constructed of wire bent to form a horizontal portion 12, vertical portions 13, loop or spring portions 14, and attaching ends 15,

which are secured to the side rails 3 and 4 of said support 2. It will be observed from Fig. 3 of the drawings that the loop 8 of each supporting member 5 is disposed some distance in. front of the upright or support 2.

In using the improved device a plurality of paper bags, such as 16, are fitted into each of the supporting members 5, the upper ends of said bags being clasped in between the loop 8 of the next higher supporting member and the support or upright 2, as shown in Fig. 1, and the spring members 6 serving to force outwardly the central portions of the bags. It will be seen that the folded bottom portion 17 of each bag is caused to project forward by the action of the spring member 6, whereby said folded bottom portion affords a convenient gripping portion, by means of which each bag may be raised slightly to disengage its lower end from the loWer supporting member 5 and to draw its upper end from beneath the next higher supporting member.

From the foregoing description it Will be observed that each supporting member 5 is adapted to retain in position the upper end of a bag supported by the next lower member.

If desired, the upper supporting member 5 may be formed with two loops 18 18. This construction is found convenient in supporting small paper bags the Width of which is equal to half the distance between the side rails 3 and 4 of the support or upright 2.

By reason of the fact that each supporting member is adapted to support the lower end of one of said bags and to retain in position the upper ends of the bags supported by the next lower member and by reason of the fact that the different sets of bags consequently overlap each other the device of this invention is adapted to hold a large number of bags in the minimum amount of space. Furthermore, each bag is held in such position that it may be withdrawn readily from the holder without disturbing the position of any other bag.

The improved device is strong, durable, inexpensive, and compact in construction.

Changes in the precise embodiment of the invention illustrated and described may be 100 made within the scofpe of the following claims without departing rom the spirit of the in vention or sacrificing any of its advantages.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A bag-holder comprising a supporting member for one end of a bag, means for forcing outward the central portion thereof, a retaining member for the opposite end of the bag, said retaining member being adapted to hold one end of another bag, and a second retaining member for holding the opposite end of the last-mentioned bag.

A bag-holder comprising a supporting member for oneend of a bag, a similar supporting member for retaining in position the opposite end of the bag and for holding another bag, and a retaining'member for holding the opposite end of the last-mentioned 3. A bag-holder comprising a plurality of supporting members, each adapted to support the lower end of a bag, and members for forcing outward the central portion of each bag, each supporting member except the b0ttom one being adapted to retain in position the upper end of a bag supported by the next lower supporting member.
