NECKTIE-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 788,338, dated April 25, 1905.

Application filed July 21, 1904. Serial No. 217,560.

Be it known that LVVILLIAM B. SMITI-I,acitizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Necktie-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective device independent of the necktie and adapted for removable engagement with the shank of the collar button, whereby a four-in-hand or string tie, with a band to encircle the neck, can be readily and securely held in the position desired.

To that end my invention consists of a novel construction for the purpose desired, which will be fully hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a top plan View of Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same, showing its removable engagement with the shank of a collar-button.

Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that my device is preferably made from a single piece of spring-wire and constructed substantially as follows:

1 is the upper loop, open at the bottom, which receives and holds the shank of the collar-button.

2 2 are parallel vertical spring extensions of the loop 1, between which the shank of the collar-button is sprung upwardly into the engaging loop 1.

3 Sare side loops forming steadying-wings which lie near the plane of the loop 1. The upper and outer ends 4 4 of the loops 3 3 converge inwardly and are then bent upwardly to form the parallel extensions 5 5, which rise to the height of the loop 1. From the upper ends of these extensions 5 5 extend the penetrating-prongs 6 6, which lie in a plane located at rightangles to the plane in which the holding-loop 1 lies, preferably diverging, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. These penetratingprongs are threaded or roughened, as at 7 In operation the holder just described is adjusted in operative engagement with the shank 8 of the collar-button 9. The four-in-hand or string tieor the made-up tie, with its band, is arranged around the neck of the wearer, and the prongs 6 6 are then temporarily forced into the material of the tie. Before the temporary insertion of the diverging prongs they can be slightly drawn together and when within the material their natural resiliency will assist in preventing the accidental disengagement of the tie; but under ordinary circumstances the threaded or roughened portions 7 of the prongs will form a sufiicient resistance to their accidental withdrawal. In this manner the necktie can be adjusted and securely held many desired position as to height either with a stand-up or turn-down collar, the collar-button being safely hid from-view. The action of engagement or disengagement is rapid and easily accomplished and the range of adjustment of the tie is not limited.

I claim 1. An independent necktie-holder for adjusting and holding the tie in any desired position consisting of a holding-loop, open at the bottom, for removable engagement with the shank of the collar-button, parallel vertical spring extensions of the loop, between which the shank of the collar-button is sprung upwardly into the holding-loop, side steadyingloops near the plane of the holding-loop and penetrating-prongs which lie in a plane located at right angles to the plane in which the holding-loop lies, for temporary holding insertion within the material of the tie, as and for the purpose stated.
