'- WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 784,405, dated March 7, 1905 Application filed February 8, 1904. Serial No. I92,588.
To It whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PETER P. KIEL, a citizen of the United States. residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in "ashing-hlachines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in washing-machines, the object of my invention being to provide a device of this character which will render the operation of washing clothes less laborious than heretofore and which shall at the same time be cheap and siniple in construction and convenient in use.
My invention therefore resides in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts for the above ends hereinafter fully specified, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a side elevation of the machine, part of the tub broken away, showing the dasher in section on the line 5 6 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 1 2 of Fig. 1, the tub being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the upper bar, Fig. 4 is an end view of a portion of the machine removed on the line 3 A of Fig. 2.
' Referring to the drawings, E represents the side pieces, F the cross-piece, L the front legs, and A the rear leg, of the frame for supporting the tub. The rear leg A is continued to a suitable height and is connected with the side pieces E by the oblique braces K.
N represents the tub, which stands upon the frame-pieces E and F, and D is the dasher in said tub, suspended by a dasher-rod C, forked at the upperend, as shown at 7), and pivotally supported upon a hand -lever B, the latter pivoted upon the upper end of the standard or leg A, as shown at a. A spring S is connected at the lower end to the standardA and at the upper end passes over one of a series of notches .v formed in the hand-lever B. The dasher D has a solid portion and a suitable number of pegs p projecting therefrom, adapted to engage the clothes and thoroughly stir and wash the same. It will be seen that with this construction pressure upon the handlever B forces the dasher D down into the tub against the tension of the spring S, such movement being followed by an upward movement of the dasher when the pressure of the hand is released, caused by the pressure of the spring S. There is also provided means for operating the dasher by the foot. For this purpose there is pivotally attached to the frame, as shown at (Z, a foot-lever P, which is guided in a metallic guide 9, said foot-lever being connected by a tie Rto the lever B, said tie engaging one or the other of a series of notches 0/. The force required to operatethe dasher is varied according to the adjustment of the tie R in the notches 02..
In practice the operator will ordinarily use both the foot-lever P and the hand-lever B, the power being applied principally by the former and the hand-lever being used to guide and steady the dasher.
I claim- 1. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a frame having at the front a level surface on which a tub can rest and having at the rear a standard, a foot-lever suitably guided below said surface. a hand-lever pivoted on said standard, a link connecting said foot-lever with said hand-lever between saidstandard and said level surface, a dasherrod connected to said hand-lever and a dasher supported by said dasher-rod independently of the tub, substantially as described.
2. .In an apparatus of the characterdescribed, the combination of a frame having at the front a level surface on which a tub can rest and having at the rear a standard, a foot-lever suitably guided below said surface, a hand-lever pivoted on said standard and having a series of notches, a link the upper end of which selectively engages one of said notches to adj ustabl y connect said hand-lever with the footlever, said link extending between said standard and said level surface, a dasher-rod connected to said hand-lever, and a dasher supported by said dasher-rod independently of the tub, substantially as described.
3. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a frame having at the front a level surface on which a tub can rest and having at the rear a standard, a foot-lever suitably guided below said surface, a hand-lever pivoted on said standard and having a series of notches, a link the upper end of which selectively engages one of said notches to adjustably connect said hand-lever with the footlever, said link extending between said standard and said level surface, a dasher-rod connected to said hand-lever, and a dasher pivotally supported by said dasher-rod independr0 ently of the tub, substantially as described. In Witness whereof I' have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
