Description

W. H. COX. SAND THROWING MACHINE.
No. 78,432. Patented June 2, 1868.

Letters Patent No. 78,432, dated June 2, 1868.
IMPROVED SAND-THROWING MACHINE.
an 52!;2111112 rtft'ttti! a in ilgttt 351m Eflutmt nth making out at the same TO ALL WHOMIKD MAY concerns:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM 'HENRY Cox, of Portland, in the county of ()umberland, and'State of Maine, havein'vented a new and useful Improved Sand-Throwing Machine; and I hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others to make and-usemy invention, reference being bad to the "accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure lie :1. top plan of my invention.
Figure 2 a centre section of the same.
My invention has relation to a device or machine employed by painters of houses, buildings, &c., for the throwing and depositing of sand ypon the fresh paint, as it is well known is the custom in variousstylc's of this kind of work.
I prefer to constant my'invention of tin or some light and thin sheet metal, the diii'ercnt parts beinz soldered togcth-:r.
In the accompanying drawings, a shows the handle. This is made hollow'for the introduction of the sand into'the machine. From this handle the sand passes into the body 6 of the device. The body is Vshaped, as seen in the drawing, tapering down to the thin end or edge 0. Here the two parts d e come near together. but are not joined, a narrow slot being left for the escape of'the sand as the device is used. f is the slot,
when filled, the open end of the handle is closed by any convenient stopper at g. It shows a lip extending somewhat beyond the slot in order to aid in the accurate and economical throwing of the sand. This lip may be stiffened by a Wire running around the lower edges of the same, and soldered thereto, seen in the drawing at z. The two parts at e of the body may also be defended and strengthened in the same way, (see 1 2'.)
The sand issues in a thin sheet from the slot f. By grasping the handle a, and giving the device the necessarymotion by the hand, the sand can be accurately thrown unon paint on the walls of buildings and other structures.
This presents some advantages orcr a machine now in use, and operated by rotating fans, .inasm'uch as it requires but a singlehand to operate it.
With the wind sand-thrower, both hands of the operator are engaged upon the machine, so that ii standing upon a ladder, for instance, it is often dificult both to maintain a secure and safe position, and also to reach' all the desired points and places on a building, but with my invention the. operator, clinging to the ladder with one hand, and thus more securely standing thereon, is more at liberty to turn to either side, or as may be desired, to reach and sand all parts of the work,
My invention isexceedingly cheap and convenient. What I claim as my invention, and clesire tc secure by Letters Patent, is- -The sand-throwing machine or device, constructed as herein set forth, and for the purposes specified.
I WILL M HENRY COX. Witnesses:
