PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK L. ASAY, OF TRENTON, NEW JERSEY.
PEDAL-STOOL FOR PIANOS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 773,113, dated October 25, 1904:.
Application filed June 6, 1904. Serial No. 211,426. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, FRANK L. AsAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Imers of small size to readily operate the pedals of pianos and to support their feet at a proper elevation; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical transverse sectional view of my improved pedal-stool, showing the same in operative position with reference to the pedals of a piano. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same, showing the inner side thereof.
The pedal-stool 1 may be of the form here shown or of any other suitable form, and the same is provided with a suitable number of pedal-keys 2, three being here shown. The pedal-keys are movable vertically in openings in the upper side of the stool and in abridgepiece 3, which connects the ends thereof, is
disposed at a suitable height from the lower side of the stool and is adjacent. to the inner wall or side 4 of the stool. The pedal-keys have heads 5 at their upper ends and are provided at their lower ends with stop-shoulders 6, the latter coacting with the bridge-piece to limit the vertical movement of the pedal-keys. In the stool, at a suitable distance from the rear wall thereof, is a longitudinally-disposed stop-piece 7, which bears against the outer ends of the piano-pedals (here indicated at a) and which prevents the stool from coming in contact with the piano and scratching, marring, or otherwise injuring the same. In the inner or rear wall 4 of the pedal-stool, at the under side thereof, is an opening 8 to clear the piano-pedals.
The stool-face 7 may be made of any suit able material. It is here shown as made of wood and is covered on its rear side with a metallic plate 9 to prevent the wear thereof. The lower ends of the keys 2 bear directly on the piano-pedals, so that the said keys are raised thereby, the springs of the piano-pedals, which raise the latter, being also used to raise the keys of the pedal-stool.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A pedal-stool having an opening in its rear side to clear the piano-pedals and having a stop-piece to coact with the piano-pedals to prevent the stool from coming in contact with the piano;
2. A pedal-stool having vertically-movable pedal-keys provided with stops, a bridge-piece having openings through which the pedalkeys extend and coacting with the stops thereof to limit the upward movement of the keys, a stop-piece in the stool to coact with the piano-pedals to prevent the rear side of the stool from coming in contact with the piano, the rear side of the stool having an opening to clear the pedal-keys, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANK L. ASAY.
