' FIACK FOR DRYING CLOTHES, ac.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 772,895, dated Octobe: 18, 1904;
Application filed December 4, 1903. Serial No. 183,739. (No model.) 7
citizen of Canada, residing at Walkerville, in the county of Essex and Province of Ontario,
Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Racks for Drying Clothes, &c., ofwhich the following is a specification. This invention relates to improvements in supporting-bars upon which towels and other articles may be hung to dry; and its object is to provide a device which is particularly adapted to be secured to the stovepipe,is very light, yet strong enough to support consider able weight, is cheap to manufacture, and is made wholly of metal.
I It is also an object of'the invention to so construct the. device that it 'may be adjustedto several positions or may be quickly low- I ered out of the way or extended for use, and,
further, to provide the same with certain other new and useful features, all as hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed 'outin the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 IS a perspectlve view of a device embodying my invention. Flg. 21s a side I elevation of the same.- Fig. 31s a plan view of the upper clamping-band and attached supporting-arm. Fig. A is a similar view of the lower clampingeband, and Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the same at right angles to the side shown in Fig. 2.
A represents a portion of theordinary stovepipe leading from a stove, and B and C are clamping-bands of sheet metal to embrace the pipe and are secured thereto by bolts D, passing through openings in the ears D on said bands to draw said ears toward each other.
At theside of the band B opposite the clamping-ears D the band is cut inward from its edges and the metal between the cuts turned outward to form horizontally-extending ears E thereon provided with holes to receive a pivot-pin, which pin is engaged by a loop E, formed of sheet metal and free to turn upon said pin from side to side or laterally of the pipe. Between the outer ends of said loop is pivotallysecured one end of the supporting arm or member F, formed of heavy Wire or a light rod by forming an eye on the end of said wire to engage a pivot-pin secured in openings-in the ends of said loop, so that the supporting member is pivotally attached to the loop to turn up or down or longitudinally of the pipe. Adjacent to the point of attachment to the loop the wire is provided with an abrupt bend, forming a vertically-extending portion or shoulder F, and at its outer end is upwardly turned to form aneye. To support the wire F in its horizontally-extended position for use, a brace G, also formed of heavy wire, is provided, said brace being attached to the wire F intermediate the ends thereof by forming the supporting-Wire with an eye F which is engaged by an eye G on one end of said brace, and at its opposite end the brace is supported by the band C.
The band C is formed similarly to the band B with horizontally-extending ears C, provided with openings C to receive the lower end G of the brace G, said brace being bent so that when the supporting-arm and brace are in operative position said end will extend vertically downward through said openings ledge H, formedof a sheet-metal strip bent 7 into a semicircular shape to extend outside or inclose the ears 0 and secured at its ends to the band C at each side of said ears.
The supporting member F being attached to the band B by the loop E allows said member to be swung laterally of the .stovepipe from side to side, and it will be held in the position to which it is swung by the brace G engaging one of the notches H in the ledge H. The member F being pivotally attached to the loop allows said member to fall downward when the brace is disengaged from the ears of the band C, and both .will hang down adjacent to the pipe, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The shoulder F prevents any article which may be hung upon the supporting-arm from coming in contact with the stovepipe, and the eye in the end of said "wire prevents such article from slipping 01f.
It is obvious that a number of such supports F and means for attaching and holding the same in place may be attached to the same bands B and C to extend radially from the stovepipe in different directions.
Having thus fully described the invention, What I claim is 1. The combination of bands adapted to be clamped around the Stovepipe, of a supporting-arm pivotally secured to one of said bands at one end, an ear and a supportingdedge on the other band, and a brace secured to said arm intermediate the ends thereof and adapted to detachably engage the ear and ledge of the other band at its opposite end.
2. The combination of bands adapted to be clamped around the stovepipe, of a supporting-arm pivotall y attached to one of said bands to turn both vertically and horizontally, a brace attached at one end to said arm, means on the lower band for engaging the lower end of the brace, a semicircularledge inclosing said means and secured at its ends to said lower band and provided with notches in its edge to engage the brace.
8. The combination of bands adapted to be clamped around a Stovepipe, horizontallyextending parallel ears on said bands provided with openings, a pivot pin secured in the openings in the ears on the upper band, a loop engaging said pivot pin to turn laterally thereon, a supporting-arm pivotally secured between the outer ends of said loop, a brace pivotally attached at its upper end to the arm and bent at its lower end to engage the openings in the ears on the lower band, and means on the lower band for engaging and holding the brace in the position to which the arm is adjusted laterally.
4t. The combination of sheet-metal bands adapted to be clamped around a stovepipe, horizontally-extending parallel ears formed up from the edges of said bands and provided with openings, :1. pivot-pin in the opel'iingsoi' the ears on the upper band, a slnmt-metal loop engaging said pivot-pin, a supportingarm formed of wire pivot-ally secured between the ends of said loop to turn vertically, a wire brace pivotally secured at one end to said arm intermediate its ends and bent at its opposite end to form a portion to engage the openings in the ears on the lower band and to form a portion extending at right angles to said end portion, and a ledge formed oi a semicircular bent strip of sheet metal inelosing the ears on the lower band and secured to said band at each side of said ears, and provided with notches in its upper edge to engage the right-angle portion of said brace.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in presence 01 two witnesses.
ROBERT F. MILLER.
