Description
No. 772,130. PATENTED OCT. 11", 1904.
- c. G. CHANDLER. I
BLIND ATTACHMENT FOR TYPE WRITERS.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 20, 1904.
N0 MODEL UNITED STATES Patented October 11, 1904.
CHESTER Gr. CHANDLER/OF LIVINGSTON, MONTANA.
BLIND ATTACHMENT FOR TYPE-WRITERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 772,130, dated October 11, 1904.
Application filed April 20, 1904.
To all whom, it may concern! Be it known that I, CHESTE G. CHANDLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Livingston. in the county of Park and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blind Attachments for Type-VVriters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments for type-writers; and the object of the invention is to produce a blind for use in connection with a typewriter for students in learning touch typewriting, whereby the keys of the machine will be obscured from the operator for the purpose of assisting a learner in acquiring this system of writing.
The invention will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in Which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a typewriter, showing my improved blind as applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one end of the bracket-arm which supports the blind, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a blind, which may be made of any suitable material and of such a size as to obscure the keys of a type-writer from the eyes of an operator. B designates a bracket-arm to which one end of said blind is fastened, and C designates a plate which is beveled at C along one edge and has a notched portion D along one edge thereof, and a portion of said plate is bent at right angles at E and in a plane coincident with one end of said bracket-arm B. The extreme end of the portion which is bent at an angle, as shown and described, is turned into a hook-shaped flange F, which is adapted to Serial No. 204,069. (No model.)
engage the front vertical posts of a typewriter, preferably of the Remington make, and projecting from the end of the bracketarm B is a lug H, made, preferably, of flexible material, such as rubber, and is designed to engage an aperture K in the upright post of the type-writer in the manner shown in the drawings. With said lug engaging the aperture in the post of the type-writer and the hooked flange passed about the edge thereof the angled portion of the plate and the ad- I jacent end of the bracket-arm will rest against .the frame of the type-writer, and the blind will be held in ahorizontal plane at such a distance above the keys as will allow the operator to freely move his or her hand in the act of writing upon the machine, while the keys of the machine will be hidden from the view of the operator.
From the foregoing it will be observed that by the provision of a blind made in accordance with my invention the operator will be greatly assisted in learning the touch system, as the keys will be obscured from view, and it will be impossible for the eyes to watch the keys, in which event the whole attention of the operator may be directed to the notes or While I have shown a particular detailed construction of blind adapted especially for the Remington type-writer, it will be understood that the blind may be used in connection with any make of machine by altering the same in certain details to readily attach the device to the frame of a machine without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with the frame of a typewriter, a bracket-arm, a lug projecting from the end of said arm and engaging an aperture in the post of the type-writer frame, a blind IOO from the end of said bracket-arm and adapted to engage an aperture in the post of the frame, a rigid blind secured to said bracketarm and having one end free, an angle-plate fastened to said arm and having a hook portion adapted for engagement with the post of the frame, as set forth.
3. In combination with the frame of a typewriter, a bracket-arm, a plate having one edge thereof notched and secured to said arm, a portion of the plate being bent at an angle in a plane coincident with the end of said bracketarm, the end of said plate being turned into a hooked flange and adapted 'to engage the CHESTER Gr. CHANDLER.
