Be it known that I, THOMAS I-I. BOAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State vof Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Type- Writer Supports, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is an improved typewriter support for use-especially on flat top desks to hold a typewriter in place for use and also enable the typewriter to be turned up out of the way to permit the use of the desk for writing and other purposes, the invention consisting in the construction, combination and arrangement o-f parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.-

The object of my invention is to provide an improved device of this character which is extremely cheap and simple, is strong and durable, may be readily attached to a desk and to a typewriter base and by means of which the typewriter may be instantly arranged in position either for use or out of the way.

In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a typewriter support constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same in use on a flat top desk and in connection with a typewriting machine, the typewriter being indicated as in upturned position out of the way. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, showing the typewriter in lowered horizontal position. Fig. 3 is a detail plan,`show ing a portion of the support.

In accordance with my invention, I provide a base frame 1 which is here shown as comprising a pair of bars 2 which are connected together at one end by a pair of rods 3. The rods are here indicated as eX-` tending through openings in the bars and as being held in place by means of nuts L1 and shoulders 5. These rods are suitably spaced apart and a pen rack or tray 6 which is shorter than the rods is arranged between them and' suspended therefrom and is provided at its sides with downturned flanges 7 which engage the upper sides of the said rods so that the pen rack is supported on and carried by the rods. y

In the spaces between the ends of the pen rack and the bars 2 are ink lwells 8 which may be of the construction here shown or of any other suitable construction. The bars 2 are arranged in upright position and each has one end turned at right angles and flattened as at 9 and secured o-n the top of a desk such as indicated at a by means of a screw 10. Each bar is also provided at the opposite end with a foot piece 11 which is bent from a single piece of sheet metal and is rectangular in form, so as to provide a vertical portion 12 which bears against the inner side of the bar 2 and a horizontal or base portion 13 which bears on the desk top and is secured thereto as by means of a screw 14. A base board 15 is yalso provided on which the typewriter is secured by the usual clamp or other suitable means, a portion of the frame of atypewriting machine being for the purposes of this specification indicated in the drawing in dotted lines at 16. This base board 15 is provided at its inner corners with a pair of arms 17 which are secured on the sides thereof as by means of screws 18 and are provided at their inner ends with openings through which the ends of the outermost rod 3 extend so that the said arms 17 serve to pivotally connect the base board 15 to the bars 2 of the frame 1 and, hence, the base board with the typewriting machine thereon may be caused to assume a horizontal position and lie on the top of the desk or may be upturned to a vertical position so as to dispose the typewriter out of the way and thus clear the desk for use for writing or other purposes. W'ashers 19 are here shown on the ends of the rod 8 to which the arms 17 are pivotally connected, the said washers being held in place by the nuts 4.

In order to support the arms 17 in upright position with the typewriting machine upturned, I provide the bars 2 with outturned spring stops 20. These spring stops engage the inner sides or edges of the arms 17 when the latter are in vertical position as indicated in Fig. 1, so that the typewriting machineis supported and securely maintained in position when the same is upturned, out of the way. The spring stops are tongues which are struck up from and formed integrally with the bars 2 and in practice, and as here shown, the said arms are preferably made of sheet metal, the arms 17 being also made of sheet metal and the rods 8 being made of wire of suitable gage. Hence, the improved typewriter support may be readily manufactured at very slight cost and it will` be found extremely useful in practice, as it not only serves to hold the typewriting machine securely both when 4in use and when iny upturned position out-of the Way but also provides a convenient pen rack and ink Well. i

While I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention, I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts Without departing from the spirit of my invention and Withinf the scope of the appended claim.

I claim:-

A typewriter support of the class described comprising a `frame having side members arranged to be secured to a desk top and each provided with a iiattened portion at one end andv a foot piece at the other end to bear on the desk top, each side member being also provided with an integral tached tosaid base and extending from the inner end thereof, and a cross bar connect- .ing'the side members of the frame and also forming pivotal connections between the arms of the base and said' side members of the yframe to enable the base With a machine thereon to be arranged either in a horizontal position with the base in line and in a common planewith the frame or in an upright position outof the Way and 'at right angles tc` the frame.
