PATENT OFFICE.
SHERMAN N. HISER, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE CHAMPION CHEMICAL COMPANY, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO, A
CORPORATION OF OHIO.
CHlN-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 771,982, dated October 11, 1904.
Application filed March 12, 1904.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SHERMAN N. HISER, a citizen of the United States, residingat Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chin-Supporters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to chin-supporters for use by undertakers in supporting and sustaining the chins of corpses until such time as they shall become set with the mouth closed.
The invention consists, essentially, of a block or frame sustained upon the chest by a cord or band, adjustable as to length, which encircles the neck and carrying a rod which may be adjusted up and downand which has a suitable rest for contact with the chin.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification and on which like reference-letters indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my chin-supporter, showing in dotted lines a face, neck, and chest to illustrate the application of the device; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the supporter alone; Fig. 3, a detail view of a part of the block or frame, showing the notch employed for holding the .free end of the neck cord or band; and Fig. 4, a detail sectional view taken crosswise from the block or frame, the binding-screw, and the adjustable rod.
The letter A designates a block or frame preferably constructed of hard rubber and having an orifice B, in which is fitted to slide an adjustable rod O, adapted to be held in adjusted positions by the set-screw D or other suitable fastening device carried by the block or frame A. The latter is further provided with an opening E at one side and a notch F at the other side for a purpose presently to be stated. The rod O is preferably curved somewhat to more readily extend above the block or frame Ain one direction to the chin and in the other toward the chest without unduly binding against the chest. The rod has a slightly flattened surface G on the side against which the fastening device or setscrew D impinges, so that the end of the screw will the more readily bind it without tending Serial No. 197,773. (No model.)
to mar the rod, which, like the frame A, the set-screw D, and the chin-piece H, is by preference constructed of hard rubber. The chinpiece H is secured to the upper end of the rod C and extends crosswise, so as to readily fit under and against the chin and to be adapted to be pressed quite severely against the chin without marring or indenting it.
The letter I designates a cord, tape, or binding of any suitable material and designed to connect with the block or frame A in a manner to be adjusted as to length, and to pass around and under the neck, so as to form a stay to hold the block against the pressure exerted by the rod 0. This cord I is secured to the frame at one end by being passed through the orifice E and tied to form a knot or enlargement to keep the cord from pulling out of the opening. The other branch of the cord has an end knot or enlargement J and one or more other knots or enlargements K, so that this branch of the cord may be connected at one point or another to the block or frame A, according to the length required to go around the neck. The notch F is inclined upward and terminates in a seat F, so that the cord when introduced into the notch will finally rest in the seat F and be drawn upward therein by the strain which is on the cord. In this way the cord will not become dislodged from the block or frame. VVhileI have thus minutely described the construction and arrangement of the cord and its connection with the block or frame, it will be understood that my invention comprises also any other mode of connecting the cord, tape, or band to the block or frame and of adjusting the same to the different lengths required.
The article is light and neat, but effective for the purpose.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a chin supporter, the combination with a block or frame, and a rod carried thereby and adapted for contact with the chin, of a cord or band connected to. the block or frame and adapted to be taken up or let out in length and to pass around the neck to sustain the block or frame against the pressure exerted from the rod.
2. In a chin-supporter, the combination With a block or frame, and a rod adjustably secured thereon and adapted at one end to bear against and support the chin, of a cord or tape secured to the block or frame and adapted to be taken up or let out and to pass around the neck and sustain the block or frame.
3. In a chin-supporter, the combination With a block or frame having an opening, a hole, a notch having a seat and a set-screw, a
rod slidably mounted in the opening and adapted to be held by the set-screw, a chin-plate on the rod, a cord having a series of enlargements, one end of the cord being permanently fastened to the block or frame and the other portion insertible in the notch.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
SHERMAN N. HISER. Witnesses:
