Be it known that I, CHA'UNCEY O. GREEArmfof thecity-f 51h-oy, in the-"county of Rensselaer, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvementin Cast-Iron Culinary Vessels, thev object o'f which invention is to prevent corrosion within the said vesselsland I do hereby declare thatthe following is 'afull and exact description of the same, reference beinghad -to the accompanying'drawing,andto the" letters vof reference marked thereon, forming 'a part of this specieation, i n .which-mtinued action "of cold or of boiling-hot water when in culinary or other uses.
Figur-el is as ectional viewof a water-reservoir or boiler, and showing my' improvement, and Figure 2 is a perspective view, and sho'vringsom'e oftbe'culinary'vessels to'which'my invention is applicable.
f The-.nature of my said invention consists in `the applicationoflnseedLoil, orff equivalent oils, to the interiorsurfacee of cast-iron culinary vessels, and then 'subjeetingthem-zto Atheiugtion of heat nntil a part' of the oil is absorbed by the metal, and theresidue is condensed end hardenedthereon in such a manner as to form. a durable anti-corrodiblo coating or enxnnelledy lining, which 'protects said vessels fromeorrosion bythe con-.
' That others skilled in the art may apply to use my inventionraforesad, and 'malte 'the sui-d improved article of castiron-vessels, I nowproceedlto fully describe the same,as follows:v
The castings of said iron vessels, A, are first well cleaned by Ascraping or scouring, them free of the'sancl or cinder adhering to them from thesand-m'oulds in vrhich they are' cast; then the interior part'or surfac'eoi said vessels Ais brushed or coated o ver with boiled or inspis'sated-linsee-dfoil, or any oils possessing theequivnl cnt properties of drying and tndensirigby tle action of heat-boiledlinseed-oil, however, beingpreferable.'
AI sometimes, as in cold weather, iva'r'in-.or 'heat the said vessels'previous tonpplying the ol, tofexpandthe pores,v
"so that the oil may'take betterl -hold therein.` The said iron vesselsyas thus prepared or coated'wthoih are next' placed and arranged uponv racks'o'r supports within any suitable ovenorkiln, in such a manner that 'a drying, evaporating, baking, andhardening heat, of temperatnres'of abouti600", more. or less', moy'eirculq .te v around and within the said-iron vessels,to thereby'inspissate, dry, bake, and harden the coatot' oil thereon, vso
rits to forrnthereof n.v hard,'durable, protective, enamelle'd'lining of oil, substantially as shown' by the brown .generally forms a suilicient and durable protection against lines B and shading D' in the annexed drawings,'and such as fully .capable ofresistingthecorrosive; act/@Lof hot 'or cold water whichth'e said vessels may contain in culinay or othe'rnses;
-In thelarger kinds 'of/vessels', such alrot-ivatcr reservoirs,- `rf'wnterlloilers for cooking-stoves or ranges,
the aforesaid process is repeitted, so as to give a thicker or d l corrosion, but if still thicker coatnguharden'd oilfis wanted, the process is to vbe again repeated nntlth'e desired thickness of coatis obtained."
' these improved cast-iron'vessels doesnot finally get :xt tho iron to corro vessels through the minute openings left in a lining coat o'f t'n"or zinc oublo coat of hardened oil to saidvessols, which.v
By the aforesaid process, an improvedsnd dixrablenrt'icle ot east-iron vessel' for culinary uses rsproducedj, I' 'and at'a costless than that of the ordinary porcelain-enamelled cast-iron vessels, or ot' the zi'neked or tinned` iron've'sse'ls now in public use for 'such purposes, and of a kind,`too', in whichtho anti-corrosive lining-coat 'does not'craek out or scalo oli', as it is liable to do in Vthe porcelain-lined vessels; and also, the. waterv lig-ld in but the lining-coat of oillbaked therein,
de it, asitdoesia the 'zioked ojr tinned in 'allprdinary culinary uses, or forheating and holding water, remains 'perfeet'as aprevoutivo ot` corrosion.
' Whatl claim as my invention, and desire tosecure byLetters Patent, is-
As a new manufactiire, thel improved article of cast-iron vessels, as described herein,vand having thei'r' thereby forminga hard, durable' interior surfaces prepared or lined .by the application thereto of oil and heat,
lining-coat therein, in the manner substantially as -set forth, and b'y which said vessels are raads non-'corrodible,
as described. i CHAUNCEY 0. GREENE.
