Be it known that I, HARVEY J. KAI-ILER, a citizen of the United States,residing at Athens, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, haveinventcd certain new and useful Improvements in Stovepipe-Holders; and I do declare the following' to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such Aas will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in means for holding stovepipes in the opening of a chimney.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple, durable, and comparatively inexpensive device of this character which may be readily attached to pipes and chimneys of various sizes and which may effectively prevent the stovepipe from sliding' out of the chimney and also from being pushed so far in as to interfere with the draft of the pipe.

IV ith these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical sectional view through a portion of a chimney and stovepipe, showing the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of a holder removed from the pipe and chimney.

' Referring to the drawings by numerals, l denotes a chimney; 2, the stovepipe-opening' formed therein; 3, the usual stovepipe-thimble in said opening; 4, the stovepipe projecting into said thimble, and 5 my improved stovepipe-holder. Saidholdercomprisesacircular clamp (i, adapted to surround the stovepipe, and a retaining' arm or member 7 ,which is secured to said clamp and adapted to engage the chimney to prevent movement of said clamp. The clamp consists of asemicircular metal strap 8, formed at one end with an oifset apertured portion 9 and a series of openings lO and at its opposite end with a triangular-shaped offset portion Il, formed with openings l2 and 13. The clamp also comprises a semicircular rod 14, formed at one end with a screw-threaded portion 15 and at its opposite end with an inwardly-bent hook 16. Said hook is passed Linder the offset portions 9 of said strap and is engaged with one of the openings l0 in the latter, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Said screw-threaded end 15 of the rod is passed through the openings 13 and l2 in the triangular-shaped end of the said strap and also through a washer 17,which is formed with a tubular shank or portion 18, adapted to surround the threaded portion of said rod and protfect the screw-threads thereon. The tubular portion of the washer eX- tends through said opening 12, as shown in 6 Fig. 2, and on the outer end of the screwthreaded end l5 of the rod is secured a winged nut I9. It will be seen that by engaging the hooked end 16 of the rod with the proper opening' l() in the strap the clamp maybe ad- 7( justed to a pipe of any diameter, and when the nut 19 is screwed upon the threaded end l5 of the rod the strap and rod will be drawn together to firmly clamp the pipe between them.

The retaining member 7 comprises a metal strip 20, which has one of its ends riveted, as at 2l, to the central portion of the strap 8 and its opposite end formed with a hook 22. This strip or arm 2() projects at right angles to the clamp and is adapted to extend between the thimble 3 and the stovepipe 4, as shown in Fig. 1. The hook 22 is adapted to engage the inner face of the chimney to prevent outward movement of the stovepipe and clamp, and all inward movement of said pipe and clamp is prevented by a stop-plate 23, which is adjustably secured upon the outer end of the strap 20. Said stop-plate is substantially-right angular in form,having one arm extending downward to bear against the front face of the chimney and its other arm secured upon the strap 20. The adjustable connection between the stop-plate 23 and the strap 20 is effected by forming the latter with a longitudinallydisposed slot 24 and passing a bolt through the same and through an opening 25, formed in said stop-plate 23. A washer and nut 26 are placed upon the outer end of said bolt 25 to securely clamp the stop-plate upon the strap IO Q0. It will be'seen that by means of this adjustable stop-plate Q3 the detent arm or member may he adjusted to a chimney or stovepipe thimble of any thickness.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is#

l. In a stovepipe-holder, a pipe-clamp comprising a semicircular strap having at one end an apertu red oiset portion, a semicircular rod attached at one end to one end of said strap and having its opposite end passed through apertures in the offset portion of the strap, and screw-threaded, a washer bearing against the outer side of the said offset portion and having a tubular thimble on the threaded portion of the rod and extending through one of the apertures in the offset portion of the strap` and a nut on the threaded portion of the rod and hearing against the washer, substantially as described.

2. In a stovepipe-holder, a pipeclarnp comprising a semicircular metallic strap provided with a triangular-shaped apertured portion at one end and an offset portion and a series of openings at its opposite end, a semicircular rod formed at one of its ends with a hook adapted to pass through and engage the openings in said strap, and at its opposite end with a screw-threaded portion adapted to extend through the apcrtured triangular-shaped portion of the said strap, a washer having a tubular portion surrounding the screw-threaded portion of said rod Within the triangular portion of said strap, and a clamping nut upon the outer end of the screw-threaded portion of said rod, substantially as described.
