Description

" UNITED ASTATES Patented December 27, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
DOMINO.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 778,25,'dated December 27, 1904. l Application filed August 6, 1903. Serial No. 168,478.
y To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH CHARLES HOW- ELLs, Sr., a citizen of the United States, residing inthe city of Summit,` county of Union, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new anduseful Improvement in the Construction of Dominoes, as set forth in'this specification.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the iigures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 is a face view of my improved domino in perspective. of the domino. Fig. 3 represents my improved dominoes at the time of mixing or shuffling the same.
i The nature of my invention consists in so constructing the dominoes that they can be more quickly and perfectly mixed or shuflied when the game is being played. To secure this end, I construct the domino with beveled surfaces, as seen in Figs. l and 2Y at 5 5 and at 6 6. Thus constructed and with their faces turned down they will, under a gentle pressure of the fingers, (made as if gathering them together,) glide the one over the other, as seen in Fig. 3, and in such a manner as to secure a more equal mixing and distribution of their numbers than can be obtained with dominoes as at present constructed.
Anotheradvantage resulting from my im- Fig. 2 is a back view proved domino is that its peculiar conformation prevents its warping when made of wood or similar material. y
I am aware that dominoes have been constructed with beveled surfaces prior to my invention; but the bevels have been confined to the sides of the domino and do not change its thickness or interfere with the parallelism of the face n'and back of the domino, being simply used as a means of keeping the line of playing-dominoes within handling distance, so that the two ends of the line are always in sight and within easy reach of both of the players, as seen in Bloomingdales patent, No. GALSQS, dated` January 23, 1900; but I am not aware that the faces or backs of dominoes beveled wholly or in part have ever been known or used prior to my invention thereof.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent as a new article of manufacture, is- A domino, whose back is fiat, but whose face is provided with longitudinally-beveled surfaces from its center out; making it substantially a plano-convexed body as shown and set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name l y to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
