IMPROVEMENT 1N CANDLES.

croyA'LL vWnoM 1T Mar'.coNoEniv-Qv i Be it known that I, JOHN LYON FIELD', of Kensington, in thev county o f Middlesezg, Kingdom of Great Britain, gentleman, have invented va new and useful Improvement in Candles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of th e.same, reference being had to the accompanying draw?v ing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. v
This invention relates to the production of Acandles that can be made in simple moulds, and will adjust themselves to various siaes of candlesticks and sockets of candlesticks, without its being necessary to use paper or to cut the candles, after-manufacture, before inserting the. ends thereof in the candlesticks or sockets; such candles possessing the further advantage, that they can beconvcniently packed for transportation in boxes of the same size as would be necessary to receive an equal number of candles-of the ordinary or plain cylindrical form.
In order to enable others skilled in vthe'art to manufacture my invention, I will nowproceed to describe the construction of the same, ireference being hadto the accompanying drnwing, which forms a partof this' Specification, and in whichv Figure'l isl an exterior view of' my improved candle. Figure 2, a section on the line 1 2, fig. 1. Figures 3 to 9, views showing modifications; and4 l Figure 10 a diagram'illustrating the manner in which the candles may be packed together. A is a candle, near the lower 'end of which' is a' rib or projection, a, parallel,o\ nearly so, with vthe axial lineof the candle, and being made by preference with its sides in the form' of arcs of. circles, each havingfor its radius the radius of the shaft or lower end of the" candle itself, so that a number of such candles may be packed closelyvtogether, their ribs -or projections only occupying ashort length of theinterstices necessarily left between the shafts or lower ends of the candles, and not'causing them (the candles) to occupyany more space than would be the case if they wereentirely without ribs or projections; There may be two or more projections on cach candle, and the projections maybe shaped differently from thosedescribed, as shown in gs. 3to 9. I
When grooved ribs or projections are employed, I prefer that the grooves should be in the form of an arc of a circle, of the same radius as that of the shaft or lower end of, the'candleitself; but grooves of other forms may be employed.- f
- Without conhningmyself to the precise form ofrib shown, I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patenti v A candle, having one or more ribs or projectionsnear its lower end, substantiallyr as and `for the purpose' described. s
In testimony whereof, vI have s igned my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
