Application filed April 21, 1904- To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN O. KRIDELBAUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hynes, in the county of Monroe and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Shade and (lurtain Holder, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a special construction of support adapted to be secured to a window-frame or the like for the purposeof holding the ordinary form of window-shade as well as the pole from which the light drapery-curtains are usually suspended The special feature of my invention resides in the provision of peculiar means whereby my holder is made extensible, so as to be adjusted for use upon different-sized windowframes.

For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for eflecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and drawings hereto attached.

While the essential and characteristic features of my invention are susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view. of a holder constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation, the adjusting members, whereby extensibility of the holder is obtained, being shown in section.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in both views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

In carrying out my invention brackets are utilized to support the shade and pole, and said brackets are of a particular construction adapted for use in connection with my invention. Each of the brackets aforesaid comprises a vertical standard 1 and outwardly-extending arm 2, which carries the curtain-pole, and an outwardly projected extension 3, adapted to support the window-shade. san, and may be modified in general construction in accordance with the general spirit of the invention. The supporting-arm 2 of each bracket is provided at a point between its ends preferably with a seat 4:, which directly receives the end portion of the curtain-pole to be supported upon the holder. The arms 2 are projected from'the upper ends of the brackets and the extensions 3 from the lower ends thereof, the extensions being provided with openings 5 to receive the journal members of the window-shade roller.

Projected from the lower ends of the standards 1 and laterally therefrom are adjustingtubes 6, said tubes being secured to the standards 1 by pins 6 or in any manner lending a sufficient substantiality for the purposes of the invention. The tubes 6 are connected by means of an adjusting-tube 7 which latter has one end portion received in one of the tubes 6-and permanently secured thereto, the other end of the tube 7 being received by the other tube 6 and adapted for adjustment therein by a telescoping action. In other words, the tube 7 is rigidly secured at one end to one of the tubes 6 and slidable at the other end within the other tube 6, so as to admit of adjustment of the supporting-brackets of the holder toward and from each other.

The foregoing admits of the use of difierentsized curtains, shades, and poles, as well as being advantageous in that the invention can be applied to different-sized window-frames The end of the adjusting-tube 7 which is received and slidably mounted in one of the tubes 6 is provided with a longitudinal slot 8 at its upper portion preferably, and this slot serves as a guide means for holding the brackets in proper alinement relative to each other as the same are adjusted. A clamp or guide member in the form of a set-screw 9 is mounted upon the tube receiving the slotted end of the tube 7, and this set-screw passes through the guide-slot 8 of the tube 7, so as to direct the movement of the brackets as regards each other in the manner above noted. This adjusting-screw in its capacity as a clamp member is adapted to engage the inner peripheral portion of the tube 7, so as to bind th'ereagainst and effectually prevent V movement of this tube, and thereby hold the brackets fixed at an ascertained adjustment. When the set-screw 9 is not binding against the adjusting-tube 7 in its clamping cooperation, the same constitutes a guide member in a manner readily apparent.

The holder is supported by means of hangers 10, which are projected upwardly from the rigid tubes 6 of the brackets at points adjacent the ends of said tubes, and said hangers are provided with apertures through which fastenings are adapted to be passed, securing the holder to the window-frame. Thehangers may be of any suitable form and of ornamental configuration, if found desirable.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new isof said standards, rigid tubes projected laterally through the lower ends of said standards, an adjusting-tube secured to one of the rigid tubes aforesaid and telescoping within the other rigid tube, said adjusting-tube being provided with a slot, hangers projected upwardly from the rigid tubes adjacent the ends thereof and provided with apertures to recei ve fastenings, and a set-screw mounted upon the rigid tube which receives the telescoping end of the adjusting-tube, said set-screw passing through the longitudinal slot in the adjdsting-tube and normally binding against the inner peripheral portion of said adjustingtube to fix the brackets at an ascertained adjustment relative to each other.
