UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
CHARLES E. TRUMP, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO NOVELTY ELECTRIC COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
PENCIL-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 775,097, dated November 15, 1904. Application filed June 29, 1904. Serial No. 214,598. (No model.)
To (LU whom it wtay concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLns E. TRUMP, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Pencil-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
My improved holder is designed to provide means for utilizing short ends of pencils without the inconvenience that attends holding them in the hand, and, further, to provide a casing for the pencil, enabling it to be reversed and clamped to cover and protect its point.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the improved holder having a pencil engaged therein. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal sectional view of the barrel. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal sectional view of the ferrule. Fig. A represents a side elevation of the barrel with the ferrule removed, and Fig. 5 represents an elevation of the open end of the barrel.
As shown in the drawings, the holder comprises the barrel 1 and the ferrule 2, which are adapted for receiving and engaging the pencil 3. The barrel, being an open tube having a dead end, has its open end provided with the plain beveled section 1, the threaded cylindrical section 1, and the longitudinal slits 1", cutting both the plain and threaded sections and forming flexible sections or fingers I", the dead end having the small aperture 1 therethrough. The ferrule is adapted to be sleeved on the open end of the barrel and has the plain beveled section 2 for engaging the beveled section 1, the threaded cylindrical section 2* for engaging the threaded cylindrical section 1 and the plain cylindrical section 2, which extends beyond the barrelthreads and beyond the slits, to cover them.
\Vith the several parts in the relation shown in Fig. 1, the beveled sections 1 and 2 being at contact, a partial turn of the ferrule 2 on the barrel 1 will contract the fingers 1 and clamp the pencil 3, the beveled section 2 wedging the beveled section 1 or the beveled end of each finger to force the fingers against the pencil. A partial turn of the ferrule in the opposite direction, relieving the pressure between the beveled sections, releases the pencil.
In the event of the sticking of a pencil or other object that has fallen into the barrel such object can be removed by inserting a wire through the aperture 1 Having described my invention, I claim 1. A pencil-holder comprising a hollow barrel having an open end divided into sections that are flexible, said sections having a plain sharply-beveled portion and a threaded cylindrical portion, in combination with a ferrule having a plain sharply-beveled portion and a threaded cylindrical portion, substantially as specified.
2. A pencil-holder comprising a hollow barrel having an open end provided with longitudinal slits forming lingers, said lingers being beveled and having a thread thereon, in combination with a ferrule extending beyond and covering said slits, said ferrule being beveled and having a thread thereon, substantially as specified.
3. A pencil-holder comprising a hollow barrel havingflexible sections beveled and threaded, in combination with a ferrule having a plain cylindrical section, a threaded section, and a beveled section, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand, this 28th day of June, 190 t, in the presence of the subscribing witnesses.
CHAS. E. TRUMP.
