Description

No. 774,462. PATENTBD NOV. 8, 1904.
V C. H. WRIGHT.
BBDSTEAD GUARD.
UNITED STATES Patented November 8, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
BEDSTEAQ-GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 774,462, dated November 8, 1904. Application filed January 11, 1904. Serial N0x 188,515. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have inventeda new and useful Improvement in Bedstead-Guards, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in the construction of guards adapted for application more especially to childrens beds for the purpose of keeping the covers upon the bed and for preventing children from falling therefrom while sleeping.
My object is to provide a light, attractive, and portable bedstead-guard of an improved construction which renders it readily adjustable for attachment to different types of bed and causes the guard when in place to operate as a particularly strong and desirable device for its purpose.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a broken perspective View showing my improved guard attached to a bed, and Figs. 2, 3, and 4c enlarged broken perspective views illustrating details of the construction.
A A are uprights or standards having feet a and provided above the said feet with vertically-elongated slots 6. Extending loosely through the slots are adjustable bed-rail-engaging attachments B, comprising, preferably, threaded shank portions c, expanded and bent end portions forming hooks cl, and thumb-nuts a, working upon the threaded shanks. On the inner faces of the standards are one or more clipsf, which may be of springy metal adapted to receive and hold guard-rails C. I prefer to form the guard-rails each of two members joined together at overlapping or telescoping end portions by collars g, preferably clamping the members and through which they may slide longitudinally. The
spring-clips f, while permitting the rails to be inserted and removed tend to clamp them quite firmly to the standards.
WVhen not in use, the device may be contracted by telescoping or sliding the rail members upon each other to bring the standards comparatively close together, and the device may be caused to stand on its feet close to a wall or. in some other out-ofthe\vay place.
In placing the device in position itmay be first elongated to the desired extent. The attachments B are then raised in the slots 5, while the feet a rest upon the floor, and the hook portions (Z are passed over a bed-rail D, after which the nuts 0 are tightened to clamp the guard against the bed-rail. The attaching hook devices B may be raised and lowered in the slots 5 to register with a bed-rail extending at any height from the floor, and they may be turned to engage the rail either from the upper or under side thereof.
While I prefer to construct my improved guard throughout as shown and described, it may be variously modified in the matter of details of construction without departing from the spirit of my invention as defined by the claims.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An extensible bedstead-guard comprising standards adaptedto rest upon the floor,
bed-rail engaging and clamping devices vertically adjustable on said standards, and guard rails detachably secured toward their ends to the standards and each composed of two telescoping members.
2. A self-supporting extensible bedsteadguard comprising standards provided with feet and With vertical slots, bed-rail-engaging hooks having threaded shanks adjustable in said slots, nuts on the shanks, and guard-rails detachably secured toward their ends to the standards and each composed of two telescop- In presence of- F.
