Description
No. 774,457. PATENTED NOV. 8, 1904.
' J. E. SMITH.
' VIGNETTER.. APPLICATION FILED IBB. 17, 904.
N0 MODEL.
UNITED STATES Patented November 8, 1904.
PATENT EETQE.
VIGNETTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 774,457, dated November 8, 1904.
Application filed February 17, 1904. Serial No. 194,048. (No model.)
To all whom, it Harry concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES H. SMITH, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois,
have invented new and useful Improvements 1n Vrgnetters, of Wl11Cl1 the following is a very simple and durable in construction, is 7 very easily manipulated, and is of moderate cost.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device attached to the top of a camera-stand and with the blender in a vertical position. Fig. 2 is a plan view with the blender inclined backward. Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan of a modification of the end of the adjusting-rod. Fig. 4 is an enlarged rear elevation of the supporting mechanism, partly in section, on line mof Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is an enlarged rear elevation of the blender, and Fig. 6 is an enlarged side view of the blender-frame clamp.
Letters of reference indicate the various features of the invention, similar letters denoting corresponding parts in the several views.
The letter A indicates the top of a camerastand, to which the vignetter is attached.
B is the vignetter-holder, having jaws 6 Z) and a thumb-screw 7/, by which the holder is secured to the stand.
C is a vertical post fixed on the holder B.
.l) is avertically-bisected preferably spherical and hollow clamp and having recesses (Z (Z in one of its members to receive the post C and being rotatable and vertically adjustable on said post.
E is a pipe which rests in recesses d CZ in the other member of said clamp. The recesses (Z and d are located at the inner opposite edges of the clamp D and are only deep enough to receive a part of the thickness of said post and pipe, the projecting parts of said post and pipe being forced against each other or against the opposite side of the clamp by the pressure of the hand-nut F as it is screwed upon the threaded bolt f, which extends centrally and horizontally through the clamp D.
. The pipe E is rotatable, tiltable, and longitudinally movable in the clamp D and may be held rigidly in any desired position by the said nut and screw or when held with only a moderate grip may be rotated, tilted, or swung right and left without changing the pressure of the nut F.
A hand-wheel c is provided on the rear or operators end of the pipe E, by which it is moved, and an arm 0, having a clamping-jaw is provided at its front end.
A rod Gr, having a handball extends through pipe E, its front end having a plate g with a vertical slot g therein. This end of the rod Cr may itself be bent into the form shown in Fig. 3, in which the loop 9 will serve the same purpose as the slot r in the plate g.
H is the blender-frame, preferably made of heavy wire bent to form the two ends and a side of a rectangle and having flanges it h to hold the blender-card I. A shaft 71., with an oscillating arm 72 at a right angle thereto, extends from the frame H and is movably clamped by the jaws 0 above mentioned, said arm 7L passing loosely through the slot g in the plate g.
By pushing forward or drawing back the rod G the blender is caused to incline as de sired, its axial line at the deepest part of the notched curve remaining substantially in the same position with reference to the focal point of the camera.
It is evident that with this construction the blender may readily be moved nearer to or farther from the camera, that it may be inclined forward or backward, or be swung upward or downward and right or left, as desired, by manipulating the wheel a or ball g, which are placed conveniently for the operator.
What I claim, and desire to secure, is-
1. In a vignetter attachable to a camerastand, a holder having jaws to engage said stand, a set-screw to bind said jaws thereon a IOC vertical post on said holder and a verticallybisected clamp on said post, for the purpose stated.
2. In a vignetter, a holder having a fixed vertical post, a vertically-bisected clamp, one of whose members has recesses to engage said post, the other of said members having recesses to engage a pipe, and means to adj ustably bind said post and said pipe in said clamp for the purpose specified.
3. In a vignetter having a holder with a vertical post, a bisected clamp on said post, a screw and nut to hold the members of said clamp together, recesses (Z in the edge of one of said members to engage said post, recesses (Z in the edge of said other member, a pipe in said recesses (Z, said post and said pipe contacting under pressure of said screw and nut l l l tical base, means for detachably fastening the said base to the camera-stand, a bisected clamp one of whose members has recesses to engage said base. the other of whose members has recesses to engage a pipe and means for adjustably binding said base and said pipe in said clamp. for the purpose specified.
5. I11 a vignetter having an ad justing-pipe, an arm thereon, a clamp on said arm, ashaft connected with theblender-frame, an arm on said shaft and a rod extending through said pipe having a terminal slot adapted to engage said arm on said shaft.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two sub- \Vitnesses:
F. Dnnnus, UnAs. I). Donn.
