PATENT OEEicE.
GEORGE H. RICH AND ROBERT C. RICH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SHAFT-COLLAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 774,199, dated November 8, 1904.
Application filed March 14;, 1904.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, GEORGE H. RICH and ROBERT C. RIcH, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaft- Collars, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to certain improvements in shaft-collars; and its object is to produce a device of this class which will have certain advantages which will appear more fully and at large in the course of this specification.
To this end our invention consists in certain novel features of construction, which are clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described herein.
In the aforesaid drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the spring-shield thereof. Fig. 3 is a central transverse section in the line 3 3 of Fig. 4, and Fig. 4 is a central longitudinal section in the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, A is the cylindrical body of our improved collar, centrally perforated, as illustrated, to be slipped on a shaft in the ordinary way. This body A is provided with a peripheral groove A, which forms a reduced hub A at the center of the body A, having at the two sides projecting flanges a. This hub hasaradial extension A through which extends a set-screw B, which is adapted to lock the collar in place. This radial extension is of such size that the head of the set-screw lies well below the level of the flanges a. The adjacent edges of the flanges a are countersunk at a to receive a spring-shield C. The form of this shield is clearly illustrated in Fig. 2, ,where it will be seen that it consists of asingle piece of metal, preferably spring steel or brass, bent into a cylindrical form and having its ends turned in at 0. The flanges a are notched to receive these inturned ends of the shield C with respect to the body A of the collar. The shield C is notched at c" to permit the insertion of a Serial 110.198.040. (No model.)
screw-driver or the like, by which it can be sprung out and removed from place.
The purpose of this device will. be readily apparent. The collar is used in the ordinary way on the shaft, and when locked in place the spring-shield is snapped over it, as illustrated, and covers the projecting set-screw and furnishes a smooth outer surface, upon which it is impossible for the clothing of a workman to be caught. The advantages of this structure will be perfectly obvious.
We realize that considerable variation is possible in the details of this construction without departing from the spirit of the invention, and we therefore do not intend to limit ourselves to the specific form herein shown and described.
We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with the body of a collar having a peripheral depression, of a set-screw adapted to secure the collar to a shaft, the head of the set-screw lying within the depression, and a cylindrical shield secured to the collar outside the set-screw and in continuous contact with the collar.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with the cylindrical body having a peripheral groove forming a reduced hub with projecting flanges, of a set-screw passing through said reduced hub and a substantially cylindrical metallic shield supported by the flanges.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with the cylindrical body having a peripheral groove forming a reduced hub with projecting flanges, of a set-screw passing through said reduced hub and a substantially cylindrical metallic shield supported by the flanges, the adjacent faces of the flanges being countersunk to receive the shield.
4:. In a device of the class described, the combination With a suitable body having a peripheral groove forming a reduced hub, and projecting flanges, the flanges being countersunk on their adjacent edges, of a single strip of spring sheet metal bent into a substantially cylindrical form, and having its cago, in the county of Cook and State of Illiends turned in and abutting1 against each othfir 1 nois, this 10th da3 of March, 1904. surroundingthe body anc lying Within t e w 1 countersunk Spaces on the flanges, the flanges 5 being notched to receive the inturned ends of said metallic strip.
In witness whereof We have signed the above application for Letters Patent, at Chi- Witnesses:
CHAS. O. SHERVEY, RUSSELL WILES.
