H I HHI IHH WI UNITED STATES Patented June 28, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
MECHANICAL APPLIANCE FOR CURE CF HEADACHE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 763,814, dated June 28, 1904.
Application filed January 18, 1904. Serial No. 189,513. (No model.)
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIJAH ALBERT TURNER,
J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Calcis, in the county of Shelby and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical'Appliances for Cure of Headache; and Ido declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements for curing headaches; and the object of the invention is to produce a means for constricting the flow of blood to the temples temporarily, thus preventing an oversupply of blood to the head, and comprises a flexible member having pads at the ends thereof which are adapted to be held by flexible arms of the device under pressure against the arteries which feed blood to the temples, and thereby restrict the flow of blood to the head.
The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and in combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then speciiially defined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of'this application, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device shown as applied to theforehead of a person. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the device. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail View.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a piece of flexible metal having arms which are bent, preferably, in the shape illustrated in the drawings, having the pads B, which are made of any suitable material and held to the ends of the device by means of screws E. Said pads, which are commonly made of wood, are convexed upon their outer faces and flat upon their inner faces or faces which contact with the inner surfaces of the metallic holder.
F designates a loop fastened to one arm of the device and to which a strap H is fastened which is adapted to pass about the rear portion of the head of the wearer and has an eye Kat its end designed to engage a hook N, which is carried by one arm of the device.
The shape of my device is made to conform to the top and sides of the head, as shown clearly in the drawings, and when applied to the head of 'a person rests upon the crown of the head, While the two arms, which are curved forward and which are flexible, are held under pressure, so that the pads will bear against the arteries which supply blood to the forehead. When thus adjusted, the strap may be passed about the rear of the head and connected at its ends to hold the device in place.
By the provision of an apparatus embodying the features hereinbefore described and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings I am able to cure headache by' checking temporarily the flow of blood. to the temples, thus affording means for allowing the oversupply of blood to leave the head, after which the device may be removed and allow the blood to flow freely through its natural course.
While I have shown a particular detailed construction of device embodying the features of my invention, it will be understood. that I do not restrict myself to the exact shape of metallic pad holding the member, but may vary the same, if desired, as to detailed construction without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A device comprising a metallic member made of a flat piece of metal bent substantially horseshoe shape and flaring, the arms of said member being forwardly curved, pads secured to the ends of the device and adapted to be held by said flexible arms under pressure against the temples of a person, with the under surface of said device resting against the crown and the sides of the head of the person, and a band or strap connecting said arms and designed to pass about the rear portion of the head of a person, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ELIJ AH ALBERT TURNERyJlZ.
