UNITED STATES PATE T OFFICE.
GEORGE A. AMs OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS,
CLAMP FOR CONVEYING APPARATUS- SPEGIFICA'IION forming part of Letters Patent No. 760,7 7 1', dated May 24, 1904. Application filed June 1,1903. Serial No. 159,462. (No modem To all whom; it may concern: I
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. AMSDEN, of
Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State. of Massachusetts, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Clamps for Conveying Apparatus, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to new and useful improvements in conveying apparatus; and its object is to produce an improved clamp by which telegrams or sheets of paper or other articles of a similar character are automatically picked up at stations and automatically discharged at other stations.
The apparatus comprises an upper and a lower track, between which runs a carrier propelled by a continuously-running cord or 1 cable, andon said carrier is carried the improved clamping device which forms the subject-matter of this invention, which automatically picks up and automatically discharges the objects carried to and from definite points. The automatic pick-up and discharge and the propulsion of the carrier are substantially similarjto that shown in Patent No. 718,185, dated January 13, 1903, issued to the Lamson Consolidated Store Service Company, of Newark, New Jersey, as my assignee.
My invention consists of certain novel features of construction in a clamp device hereinafter described.
In the drawing the figure is a perspective view of an improved clamp and cooperating parts.
The upper and lower channel-tracks A and B are supported by suitable brackets A, and between said tracks runs the carrier C, propelled by continuously-running cable in a manner substantially similar to that shown in the above-mentioned patent. To said carrier is secured the plate D, providedwith two outwardly-extending lugs J, which form a hearing for the shaft H. On saidshaft is rigidly mounted the arm G, formed integral with the upwardly-extending arm L, on the upper end of which is a suitable roller L. Also around said shaft is a spring I, secured at K in the arm G and at its opposite end bearing on the upper end of the lug J.
The clamp consists of an upper member E and a lower member F, formed as shown.
The upper member extends out from the plate D through the lugs J and is provided at its center with a substantially right-angle pro-- the two members of the clamp the same can- 1 not slip out, owing to the projections E E, F, and E the same holding the articles firmly in place, the projection E having a downward pressure on the center of the telegrams or other articles. The roller L, as shown in the drawing, will engage the switch M, opening the clamp to allow the discharge of the telegrams, and continuing will be opened by another switch, similarly placed to the switch M, to pick up telegrams, &c. This opening for picking up and for releasing articles is' similar to that shown in the above-mentioned patentand forms nopart of the present invention. I do not limit myself to the arrangement and construction shown, as the same may be Varied Without departing from the spirit of my invention. v
Having thus described the nature of my invention and set forth a construction embodying the same, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
In an apparatus of the character described, a clamp consisting of an upper fixed member and a lower spring-controlled member, the upper member having an intermediate projection and projections at its extremity at an angle thereto, and a lower member having a side projection at an angle thereto.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 18th day of May, A. D. 1903.
