CABLE-CARRIER APPARATUS.
Application filed December 7, 1908.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE A. AMsnnN, of Littleton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Cable- (larrier Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cable carrier apparatus, and particularly to a home or central station.
The object of this device is to so construct and install. the same that the propelling or driving cables are diverted to the power or driving pulley without interfering with the working space at the cashiers desk thereby permitting greater accessibility for the despatching and receiving of carriers by the operator and also protecting the operator from contact with the running cable.
In the accompanying drawing is illustrated a construction embodying my inventio-n, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the central or home station located at the cashiers desk. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of Fig. 1.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts throughout the several views.
A represents the cashiers desk and B represents the vertical standards which support the horizontal station bars 0 through suitable cross brackets D. The horizontal bar C has secured to it the track support ing brackets ll, to which are secured the receiving tracks G and the despatching tracks F.
H represents the usual endless driving cable supported by the terminal pulley J, journaled in an end bracket J secured to the front of the horizontal bar C, the said cable being guided over pulleys K, which are journaled in the brackets E near the rear of the cashiers desk over which pulleys the cable passes down through the cashiers desk to the power drum or pulley (not shown). The pulleys K are ell-set from the tracks G to prevent the cables from interfering with carriers delivering on tracks G. The terminal despatching tracks F, as at F, approach the cable Hat an angle so that a carrier being placed thereon and pushed along said tracks engages the cable causing the same to be despatched to one of the out stations. The arm L mounted on one of the brackets E has an eye therein Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Got 28, 1913. Serial No. 466,278.
through which the cable H is guided, pre venting said cable from being pushed away from the carrier when the carrier is moved into engagement therewith.
The receiving tracks G are open, as at G, at the end nearest the operator which permits the removal of carriers which have delivered on to said tracks.
M is a guide pulley adapted to hold the incoming portion of the cable in alinement with the tracks G.
In despatching a carrier at the central station the operator inserts the carrier at N between the tracks F and pushes the said carrier along the incline on said tracks until the clamp of the carrier reaches and engages the cable H causing the carrier to be driven along the track F to one of the substations. A carrier arriving at the home stat-ion releases the cable just previous to reaching the pulley M and slides along the tracks G by momentum being retained thereon until removed by the operator from the open terminal G on said tracks. In this construction of the home station the units of receiving and despatching stations "for each line are alike and are adapted to be mounted one above the other on the standards B thereby saving in the cost of construction over systems wherein each terminal station is constructed dilterent.
Having thus described my invention and set forth a construction embodying the same, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. In cable-carrier apparatus, a track, a carrier-propolling cable traveling with said track, guide pulleys to hold the cable to the track, and oft-set pulleys between said guidepulleys to divert the cable laterally with respect to the track and to form a bight therein leading away from the line of the track, said cable being driven from said bight.
2. In cable-carrier apparatus, forwarding and return tracks, a carrier adapted for in separable engagement with said tracks when traversing the same, pulleys at the ends of said tracks, a cable for propelling carriers along said tracks, said cable being continuous and being looped back upon itself around said pulleys, said cable further having portions thereof angularly disposed with respect to adjacent parts of the line of travel of said cable to form a bight in the cable in termediate said pulleys, said cable being continuously driven from said bight, a plurality of revoluble devices disposed one upon each side of said bight and aiding in maintaining the same, said devices adapted further to oft-set said cable to space the bight laterally with respect to one of said tracks, means co-acting with the cable to free a carrier from said cable as the carrier approaches said devices, the track upon which the so freed carrier rides having provisions for permitting the separation of said carrier therefrom.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of 15 two subscribing Witnesses, this fourth day of December A. D. 1908.
GEORGE A. AMSDEN.
