IMPROVED BED-BOTTOM.
@itt .tlgetvle wenn tu in time Enten ttertt mit mating pnt nf tige me.
TO ALL vWHOM I'l MAI7 CONCERN:
Be it known that I, J. IQMABBETT, of Titusville, in the county of Crawford, and in the State oi'- Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements -in Bed-Bottoms; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,-a nd exact description thereof, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference .marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, A'represents the legs, and B the sides of an ordinary bedstead. l
C C represent levers, pivoted in side' of and to the side-rails B B, and have a. suitable cross-bar or slet con'- necting their lower ends together. The upper ends of the levers C C are slotted, and have small pulleys, ll, adjusted therein, which form suitable rests for the arms D D. The arms D D are also pivoted to the inside ot the side-rails B B, nearer the foot than the levers C C, and, with their crossfslats, jj, form a suitablehead-rest when elevated to suit.
A crank and suitable winding-shaft, d, are adjusted to the head of thebedstead, or legs thereof, as' shown, the shaft being provided with a small hole, in which the dog or 'hook l)ivwill catch, and thereby hold said shaft from turning. l l.
v'cord, b, is attached to the shaft d an'd to the cross-piece,- connecting the levers C C together.
By turning the crank, fl, the cord .b is wound up, and the levers C C are operated, and the arms D D, forining a, l1ea d-rest, are elevated thereby tof any point or position desired, when the dog fis caught in the hole in the winding-shaftd. l
Attached to each ofthe posts A, just above the side and end-rails, are elastic bands or rings',gy, as shown, in which I hook suitable cross and end-pieces for my bed-bottounl Pinned to one of'these end-pieces, and passing through loops in the other, is a series of slats, t h, as will be'seen'by reference to the drawings.
The two outside slatsare pinned at both ends, to keep the cross or end-pieces from spreading toofar apart.
' The slats h L are composed or made of two slats or strips, pinned or riveted together at their opnsiteends, and blocks or spreaders, x x, inserted and secured 'between the twoY parts, as shown, thereby making n springslat, which may be used as a spring' for cheap sofas or settees, or for lght'vehicles, as well as for a bedbo ttom,
as herein described.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I"I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Iatent, is- The combination of the slats L 7L, constructed as described, andtheir bands, gg, with the movable arms D D, cross-slats'jj, levers C C, having pulleys at their tops, cords ff, andwinding-shaftel, the several parts being constructed, arranged, and used as specified. A
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand and seal, this 26th day of February, 1368v J. I, MABBETT. [L. s]
