UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN KNOX HARRIS, OF COOHRANVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
MOVABLE WIRE FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part bf Letters Patent No. 7 67,813, dated August 16, 1904.
Application filed March 3, 1904.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN KNOX HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cochranville, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Movable Vire Fences; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my fence. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the lower part of one of the posts. Fig. 3 is a detail side View illustrating the connection of the wires 8 with the end bars p. Fig. 1 is a similar view in perspective. Fig. 5 is a detail view illustrating the wiring of the end posts together. Fig. 6 is a detail view illustrating the use of the strips 1;.
The invention relates to portable wire fences; and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the letter a designates the outer frame of one of the sections, which is made of flat iron about one-quarter of an inch thick and which need not be over two'and one-half inches wide. This is bent at right angles at I) b to form a strong frame having a top portion 0 and end posts d d, which are provided with feet 6, consisting of iron rods, which are bolted to the end posts. Braces f are also bolted to the end posts and serve to steady Serial No. 196,404. (No model.)
are located near the posts (Z of the outer frame and are connected to these posts by means of bolts 2,.
7 Each panel-bar should have about ten or twelve slots made in it from the edge in succession, one under the other at about equal distances apart, to form seats for the wires 8, which are separate from each other and are provided with enlargements or bosses at their ends, as indicated at 2. hen the wires are slipped into position in the slots of the panelbars, the latter can be tightened up toward the end posts of the section by means of the bolts 2., so that the wires will be held securely. In cold weather the bolts 6 can be loosened a little in order to slacken the tension on the wires. If the sections a are made very long say, sixteen feet or morethen it will be advisable to use middle stays a for the wires. These stays may be made of wood and the wires connected thereto by means of staples a.
If the fence is to remain in position for some time, it will be advisable to provide the feet of the posts of the section with anchorplates. This fence is, however, designed more particularly for a movable fence, and it will be found advantageous in this regard, as its position can be easily changed when desired, as in plowing new ground, enlarging fields, &c. Farmers are apt to need fences of this temporary character for making pens and feeding lots for their stock. If greater strength is needed, the sections can be connected by .wiring their end posts together, as shown at 20, Fig. 5.
To fasten the wires in the slots of the panelbars, strips 4; may be bolted to the bars after the insertion of the wires. (See Fig. 6.) This strip is also serviceable in clamping wirenetting to the panel when the sections are used for poultry-pens.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
