NITED STATES PATENT CFFICE.
EDWARD M.DCRANDAL, OF MARSHALLTOWN, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCES.
Speciication forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,358, dated November 26, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD M. CRANDAL, of Marshalltowm; in the county ot' Marshall and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Fences, of which the following is a specification:
The invention consists in an arrangement of rails, posts, and braces to form a cheap, strong, and durable, yet easily-transported, fence.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a top view. Fig. 3 is a detail, showing the mode of supporting the rails. Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-section of Fig. l looking to the right from the line w w. Fig. 5 is a vertical cross-section looking to the left from the line y y of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 shows the corner-post detached.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents a cornerpost of my fence, which consists of four uprights, a, connected together by transverse bars B, extending outward laterally in different directions so as to support the braces C. The uprights are also connected together by rails D, upon which the rails E of the fence rest, the ends of the rails being notched and held down by wires F, as plainly shown in Fig. 3. The uprights of the post A are placed at a sufiicient distance apart to admit the rails and allow the fence to be any desired number of rails, and each one may be removed separately, so that a gateway may be made between any two posts for the passage of teams, or for stock, or for other purposes.
Having thus described my invention, I cla-i n1 as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A portable fence composed oi' the uprights a a, rails E, braces C C and G G and H H, all constructed and arranged as shown and described.
2. In combination with the notched rails E and uprights a, the nails D and wires F, as and for the purposes described.
E. M. CRANDAL.
