TO ALL WHOM T MAY CONCERN: p
Be it known that I, SAMUEL EHRMAN, of Chicago, in the State of ]llinois, have invented a new'and improved Combination for Supporting"*Table-Leaves; and vI do hereby declare' that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure I shows the hinged circular -sliding barA, which is connected by the" hinge B to the under side of the leaf of the table. This circular arm has a notch, ct, at its free end, which passes through a slot, E, made in a plate, C, attached centrally to the frame of the table. Said 4plate C has a latch, D, aixcd by a pivot, d, and locks into the notch a in the circular sliding bar A, and thus supports theleaf of the table.
Figure 2 shows the parts detached.
Figure 3 illustrates the application of the same to a table with the leaf up.
Figure 4, the same with the leaf down.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a central support for ea'oh table-leaf, that will lock mechanically, and hold the leaf up firmly, bysimply raising ltheleaf up. This is accomplished by a drop-latch, as shown.
Any one skilled in the art will be enabled to make and use my inventionby a simple inspection ofthe drawings and foregoing explanation of the figures. i
I am aware that' circular slide-bars are variously employed, but not provided with a hinge or pivot attachment at one end, and a notch or shoulder a'tthe other, in combination' with a slotted plate provided with a drop-latch, to fall into the notch, or so that the shoulder-on the sliding .bars props against-the latch, all combined and operating in the .manner shown and set forth. l I am aware, also, that a hinged arm is used in.Pate nt No. 51,647, of December 19, 1865, to support a table-leaf. This,'however, cons-ists of a `straight arm, hinged to the table-leaf, forming a hinged bracket, to bear against the frame of the table underneath, which'requires a spring, alsovconnected with the leaf of the table, to keep it in place. The free end'of this bracket sets into a loop, and has a p in or catch over it, claimed, all constructed as and for the purposes specified. Such a support and construction I do not claim. My combination diiiers substantially inA its construction and operation. The latch D, with its prolonged and enlarged end, held on a free pivot on the slotted plate C, cut out also, for the greater freedom of play for the drop-latch on' the plate, the curved arm A, on its pivot or hinge B,Vplays freely through the slot E in the plate C and frame of the table, the operation being simply to raise the leaf to its `full extent, when the latch drops into the notch a by its own gravitation, this device being' simpler in con struction and operation, and deemed a desirable improvement. y
What I claim as my invention, and desire to 'secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the plate C, with its drop-latch D and slot E, in combination with the curved arm A,
when provided with a hinge, B, at o ne end, and notch or shoulder, a, at the other, operating and constructed in the-manner and for the purpose specified.
SAMUEL EHRMAN.
