TO ALL WIIOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, DANIEL BULL, of Amboy, in the countyof Lee, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Portable Table for Couches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making al part `oi' this specication, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the application of my invention to a bedstead.` Figure 2 is a side elevation, showing theinvention applied to a bedstead and arranged as a hook-rest. Figure 3 is a view of the table and its swinging support detached from the bedsteud.` i
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in theseveral figures.
.This invention relates to anew and improved device which is adapted for beingreadily applied to a hedstead, and to serve as a convenient table or shelf for holding various articles which maybe required by a person lying in bed. It is soconstrueted that it can be adjusted in a horizontal position,to serve as a table, and in an inclined position, to-serve as a shelf for supporting a. book in front of a `person lying inhedfV And it is so appliedto a bcdstead that it can be raised or lowered, or swung around to any convenient position, ormoved out of the way at pleasure, as will be hereinafter described. i
To enable others skilled in the art to understand my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanyingdrawings, A represents a swinging support, which is adapted for sustaining the table B. This swingingsnpport is a rod bent so as to form astraight vertical portion, a, a curved overhanging portion, b, and a horizontal portion, c, to the end of which latter the table B ispivoted.r Upon thc straight portion aof rod Aa collar, d, is secured, by means of a set-screw, so that by loosening thescrcw` the collar can hc adjusted freely. At a suitable point upon the head-board or post of the` bedstead `a staple or eye-bolt, e, is fastcned, and directly beneath this bolt another one is secured to the rail or post, as the case may bc. lhe `collar d upon the rod a is adjusted and secured at a proper point thereon, and the rod inserted through the eycscpso that the said collar will rest upon the upper eye, and thus form a bearing. By these meanstheswinging support is attached to a bedstead soa-s to swing freely, and admit of being moved to any convenient position. AIt can also be removed from the bedstead, or adjusted andlset higher or 1ower, as circumstances require. `The horizontal portion chas an eye,f, formcdon one end, through which passes a vertical pin; that is secured to the centre of a cross-bar, g, thus pivoting'this bar to the support A. The table B is pivoted to .the ends of the i cross-har g hy means of eyes, as shown in the drawings. Into the upper edge of the table B a pin, z., is inserted loosely, on the upper end of which pin an eye, i, is formed, through which the curved overhanging portion bof the swinging support is passed, thus attaching the upper end of the table to said support. The pin z h forms l a swivel connection for allowing the table' to be turned squarely around, as shown in iig. 3, `when it is desired l to move it out of the way, as indicated in fig. 1 in dotted lines. The end play which the pin h is allowed to have in its socket in the upper end of the table will prevent thc jointsV from binding, should fthe curve of the i. portion `b not be exactly concentric to the axis of the cross-bar g at the lower en'd ofthe table. The pivotal or' hinged attachment of the table, with the cross-bar g, will admit of the adjustment of the former, either inV tho horizontal position shown in fig. 1, or in the inclined position shown in lig. 2, in either of which position-s the table can be secured to the swinging support by means of a set-screw, z', which is tapped through the eye 7a. The bow which I have represented in iig. 4 is designed for use in conjunction with a mosquito-net, the bow being placed across the swinging supportA and the'mosquito-netting thrown over it.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is-` l i 1. '.[fhc combination of an adjustable table, B, with a swinging support,A, constructed and adaptedto oper- :ttc substantially as and for the purposes described.
L. Pivoting the table B to the bar c of the support A, so that said table can be adjusted audset in a horizontal planc,'and also inclined, at pleasure, substantially as described.
3. I n combination with the support A, constructed 'as described, I claim the pivoting of the tahleB to a fpivotcd bar, g, at one end, and to the curved portion b at the other end, substantially as described.
