Description
- U ITED I STATES Patented March 8, 1904s PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN JACOBS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
RULER. I
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 753,886, dated IiIarch 8, 1904. Application filed October 24, 1903. Serial No. 178,357. (No model.)
- T aZZ whom it may concern;
' Be it known that 1, JOHN H. J AOOBS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rulers, of which the following is a specification.
' My invention" relates to rulers; and its pri mary object is to provide a blotting means adapted to be easily and readily attached to.
and detached from a ruler of any construction, whereby a ruler maybe used without liability of the'surface which is being ruled becoming soiled by inkrunning from the guiding edge of the ruler to the surface.
A further object of the invention is to provide novel devices adapted to removably secure the blotting means in applied position and to afford means by which the ruler may.
be handled. x H
With the 'above and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction,
combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which disclose the preferred embodiment of my invention, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a ruler equipped with a blotting. means constructed in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, the ruler and blotting means being broken away, at the points where the securing devices are located.
Referring to the drawings by reference-numerals, 1 designates an 0rd inarily-constructed ruler, 2 the blotting means, and 3 the devices for detachably securing the blotting means in applied position.
The ruler is provided with openings 4:, ex tending from the upper to the under surface thereof and preferably three in number, two being disposed near either end of the ruler and the third in the center thereof. The openings have their upper portion restricted to provide shoulders 5, the purpose of which will be hereinafter fully pointed out. The
' the surface being ruled, and one of its edges is in vertical and longitudinal alinement with the guiding edge of the ruler to receive any ink which might otherwise flow from the guiding edge to the surface being ruled and also permits the rulerto be used on surfaces having wet lines. The blotting means is provided with openings 6, adapted to aline with the openings 4:, and their lower portions are enlarged to provide recesses 7. The fastening devices comprise internallyscrew-threaded sleeves 8, provided with horizontally-disposed heads 9 and threaded bolts 10, adapted to be received by the sleeves and provided with knurled head 11, by means of which they are turned to be connected to or disconnected from the sleeves. One of the heads 11 preferably the center one, is increased in size to provide a handle'by means of which the ruler may be conveniently handled, while the remaining heads are sufficiently small to prevent them from forming obstructions, but not to prevent them from being easily are adapted to occupy the openings 6 and project thereabove to fit in the enlarged portions of the slots 4 and abut against the shoulders 5. The heads of the sleeves are adapted to occupy the recesses 7, to be embedded in the blotting means sufiiciently to prevent them from coming into contact with the surface being ruled. The bolts 10 are adapted to project through the restricted portions of the slots 4.- and be turned into the sleeves 8 to secure the blotting means in applied position. The engagement of the shoulders 5 by the upper portions of the sleeves prevents the heads 9 from being drawn upward farther than is necessary to firmly connect the blottingmeans to the ruler, thereby obviating all liabilityof the fastening devices causing the surface of the blotting means to bulge at the points where it is connected to the ruler.
It is apparent from the above-described construction, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, that I provide a blotting means which may be readily and easily attached to any construction of ruler to absorb all ink that would otherwise flow from the guiding edge to the surface being ruled and that the blotting means may be readily removed when soiled to be replaced by a new blotting means. It is further apparent that the manner of securing the blotting means in applied position obviates all liability of the surface of the blotting means becoming uneven, consequently avoiding any rocking motion of the ruler when in contact with a surface, which would otherwise occur, and that the provision of one of the fastening means with a handle enables the operator to conveniently manipulate the ruler.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, iso 1. A device of the characterdescribed, comprising a ruler, a blotter, means carried by the blotter, and means carried by the ruler and adapted to detachably engage the first-mentioned means to removably secure the blotter in applied position. 7
2. A device of the character described, comprisinga ruler, a blotting means, sleeves carried by the blotting means, and means carried by the ruler and adapted to engage the sleeves to secure the blotting means in applied position.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a ruler, a blotting means, sleeves carried by the blotting means, and bolts carried by the ruler and adapted to engage the sleeves by the ruler and adapted to engage the sleeves to secure the blotting means in applied position, one of said bolts being provided with a handle.
5. A device of the character described, comprising a ruler provided with shouldered recesses, a blotting means, means carried by the blotting means and adapted to engage the shoulders of the recesses, and means carried by the ruler and adapted to engage the second-mentioned means to secure the blotting means in applied position.
6. A device of the character described, comprising a ruler provided with openings reduced to provide shoulders, a blotting means provided with openings and recesses communicating therewith, sleeves adapted to occupy the last-mentioned openings and engage said shoulders, said sleeves being provided with heads adapted to occupy the recesses, and bolts provided with knurled heads and occupying the firstmentioned recesses and adapted to engage the sleeves to secure the blotting means in applied position.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' JOHN H. JACOBS.
